Anyone got or had any experience with the Gen 2 8th Century Viking Sword, I'm looking for something a little different in a viking sword and havent been particularly drawn to the river whitham,
It looks fairly simple and purposeful and I've heard Gen 2's seem to have good (as in proper) edges from the factory.
Opinions anyone, its either this or a windlass viking I'm tossing between

Hello Brissybeater,
A friend of mine has this sword and I had the occasion to handle it and cut with it...It's a very solid sword, it respects the general look of it's type (don't remember the exact typology, Petersen type H hilt maybe? I'll have to check). Of course, the pommel is in one piece and the handle is a bit long for a viking sword, features common in such price range production swords it seems...the edge is good, it's not razor-sharp but a nice job on the sharpening nevertheless (i.e., no visible bevel), cuts good, maybe a bit on the heavy side: then again, for a viking sword, it's quite long if I remember correctly...There's one thing for sure: it's a solid beast! I would re-wrap it for a better grip: it slipped from my grasp and went flying at some point, I guess from the sweat (it was a hot summer day) on the pigskin wrap (which I don't care much for anyway). But, all in all, nice sword and very solid. Hope this helps!
So it's between this one and the 5-lobe? Keep us posted on what you'll settle for!

Well kinda 3, the windlass norse viking (looks a little like tinkers coming out) the windlass 5 lobed you yourself have and this chunky gen 2 ........ I suppose the gen 2 would be the longer lasting in its solid construction, beefy and simple I like that in a viking type X, and yeah I'm totally gonna rewrap the handle in a better quality leather likely a brown tone (black leather doesnt thrill me anymore these days everyone does it and it isnt as authentic). Then again the windlass is cheaper and might be totally worth the price, but no wood core scabbard which peeves me alot (yeah yeah cost I say its still mandatory). So might come down to flipping a coin yet

Have you thought about the windlass Leurterit? Its light and nimble, with just a little whip in the blade. on the plus side wooden handle, negative- no wooden core in the scabbard. Amoung the windlass vikings I've owned, its in my top two favorites.

Brissybeater,
Coincidence, I too was interested in the norse from MRL before buying the 5-lobe, it also looks like a nice piece. It's true that a wooden core scabbard is a nice plus. I hope I didn't sounded like the 8th century doesn't handle well, it does, it's just a bit on the weighty side. But, overall, it's a nice sword imo, with maybe a bit of home improvement, it could be very nice indeed.

Yeah reflinger your description was a good view for me to think on I appreciate it heaps, I'm very tempted to swing to it, I like swords that come with a wood core on their scabbards not just for storage but its easier to customize and it saves me having to make one for my blade aftermarket. I'm dead keen to get one soon and do a review (hopefully with video cutting if I can get my digi and youtube it) as there are quite a few viking sword fans and heaps of sub 300 viking blades yet unreviewed. Avery: Yeah saw the Leurterit, even handled it by freakish chance 5 years ago but it just didnt seem to do much for me, also wasnt keen on the look but a personal pickiness on my part

Incidentally I've been looking at the very decorative windlass "Sword of the Viking King" you know the one with the faux fur scabbard and all the nice fittings ....... the blade looks good, looks stiff, furniture pretty chunky but fairly period, the handle is wrapped leather flat cord so not your adverage windlass, and the scabbard....... well very nice, only thing that bugs me is the sucker has a threaded pommel which I'm not a fan of. Anyone held or experienced this blade ? or heard anything about it I thought it fairly gaudy at first but I look over it in real shots on KoA's website and I dont know seems to have something going for it ........

If I can chime in on this one also...I prefer the Norse viking myself, compare the pommels: the Norse's one is better defined in my opinion, and with twisted wires inserts...I dunno, the king is too "flashy" for me, they seem to have put alot in an elaborated scabbard which, in the end, is only leather wrapped in faux-fur and a detailed but cast chape...and the threaded vs peened option... Just my opinion thought, haven't handled it or anything. Maybe it's a better sword in the handling department, but until we have the opinion of someone who handled it, I just thought outloud on aesthetics and other subjective things...take it with a grain of salt! It may be the one for you, the one that makes you happy and "talks" to you, and that's what counts! (My opinion is biased, thought, since I saw what this guy did with his MRL Norse: (scroll down a bit...) www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=132&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=520 ) p.s.: the 5-lobe and norse are at a good deal in the Last chance section at Museum Replicas... Good hunting! Looking forward seeing which one you'll get and hearing you thoughts on it! Reflingar

I know I've been lax in doing the revue for the viking king sword, I've been busy trying to stay afloat, I have one in my possession, the pics I have are not the greatest and I've tried to post but I'm a lame you know what, in short, the sword fittings are large, the hilt and pommel make the scabbard fittings look small, the blade is nice in Finnish but when you hold it out in front of you with the flat of the blade level with the ground the blade sags, turn it over and it sags the other way, in my opinion, it's to whippy, I would like to see more steel in the blade and less mass in the fittings, does that make sense?
How ever if you want to practice "Tie Che" it has a nice even balence.....................I will get the Norse sword next which was the sword I was going to get when I seen the "Eye Candy"......SanMarc.

Yeah my money is on the Norse Viking, good looks and value and blade seems sound (so overall good for the price) ....... and yeah gonna be a treat to custom up. Nice thing about windlasses always good to kit up, yes I wont be tempted by the tartly viking king . Hopefully no windlass dud (fingers crossed)

Hey brissybeater, I saw this thread about 15 minutes after ordering an 8th century viking from KoA, I have a lot of faith in gen2 products as do lots of people. After ordering it I actually wanted to see if any one had done any reviews. In hindsight I should have waited to read any reviews (I can't find any) before buying it. Everything turned out good though. I got the sword yesterday and am very pleased with it. I haven't cut with it yet, except for a piece of paper. I did do a british proof test. A firm blow to a piece of wood with the flats and edge of the blade. No rattles and no warping of the blade. It is very stiff. The blade is 30 inches and the balance feels pretty good to me. As far as fit and finish its not great but definitely not poor. Anyways before this turns into a review, I just wanted to let you know that as usual per gen2 products its very good value for the money. I hope your windlass turns out good. They can be hit or miss unfortunately.
