Is the end of the Sir William Marshall sword's tang peened over the pommel or is it threaded and tightened with a simple nut. A review on SBG said it was peened over the pommel and a review on MyArmoury.com said it used a nut that required a special tool to tighten. I am not sure what to believe. Does anyone own one or know if it is peened or threaded.

The one I have seen in the shop was peened.

Luka, do you know when Hanwei started peening their tangs? I know the threaded rod was an issue some time back...don't know if they changed policy but if the Marshall's peened, they have. alexrmis, this might be a case where the older ones were threaded and newer ones peened. You looking to get one? You might want to try Kult of Athena, www.kultofathena.com - I can't see their website here at work but I'm sure that sword's in their line up. You can try to find out from them.

The first time I have seen it with a peened tang was I think year 2006. But I'm not 100% sure on that. But they peen them for at least 2 years and probably more.

Ah, I see...but they were making Marshalls as far back as what, 2003, 2004? If that is the case, then he probably saw or heard of an older version.

Probably. Before this topic I didn't know they even made them with threads.

I did; I was doing some research- at the time (2004) MRL/Windlass, Hanwei and a couple other outfits were all using threaded tangs; I'm guessing they are easier to craft and take less time, less material = save some money? I don't know...I'm just glad that they've decided to up their respective games and started peening tangs.
But now I hear about hollow pommels and ask myself- was this just a matter of robbing Peter to pay Paul; peening tangs but now hollow pommels?

The one older William Marshall (2006 mfg) and one older "Bastard Sword" (2007 mfg) I have disassembled both had threaded tangs and hollow pommels. It appeared that the tang was threaded so they could use a nut to tighten the pommel while it was being glued onto the grip. The opening in the base of the pommel was large enough that the wooden grip fit inside and extended to the back of the pommel. It was held together by lots of glue. Here's a pic: But this has been subsequently changed to solid pommel construction. This is a newer Bastard sword disassembled:

Hey Mike, thanks for posting this...but is that the solid pommel in the last pic there? It looks sort of hollow from this vantage point.

The first picture is of the old style threaded tang and hollow pommel construction. The second is of the current solid tang and pommel construction.
