How important is the curvature of a katana usually with the real deal japanese katanas you see a pronounced curvature and with the ones made in china and elsewhere you tend to see far less curvature so how important is it? (it prolly means more cutting ability. just my thought)

It's called sori in regards to japanese blades. Different periods of japanese history had different types of swords with different amounts of sori. There is also much discussion about effectiveness of sori and whether it aids or inhibits cutting ability etc. It depends how you like to cut, some people like to draw through the cut and some people like to just make straight cuts. If you draw in the cut more sori will be effective, if you straight cut then less sori but slightly different technique. Sori and it's amount is dependent on school, technique and a number of other things.

I seem to remember reading (a long, long time ago) that the sori aids in the quickness of the draw. Could be wrong, though.

I dont know if that is true but I would think that the large sori would aid in a quick draw.

I can draw, and have seen drawn, straigt swords just as quickly as any of my katana. The curve may make things more natural, but not really quicker. It's pretty much as 'wraith said; different periods, styles, etc. called for different blades. The sori seen on production kat is just the best compromise for a mass-production operation.

;D That's a tip cut with very little if any draw but enough to get the job done. I watched that one done and it pretty much fell though the wara (Bugei butter, fun though, still take a foot off). I do play with very light and straight blades and there is no doubt draw is key. Yet, even with the katana of even pretty curvy blades, it is really more of a sharpness and geometry (mass behind the impact and speed at times). I'm sure not purposely drawing much when cutting unpegged mats with broad thin medieval cuttersas well. Part of that is still body mechanics and what two handed cuts will add draw regardless. I'm surley no master at this and someone like RicWilly has countless more cuts than I in the past decade. Some actually cast a blade well past the impact and draw back through. Others get the slice on the push. In Todd's shot with the GBS and the wara, it really did look like the draw was minimal but it was still there. Cheers Hotspur; I used to like pallet wrap cores and empty cracker boxes. Bundles of dead hose was fun too.[

While on the subject of sori:
Does anyone of you know of a reasonably priced production katana with a large amount of sori? My interest is piqued...

Last Legend is one of the only big names (to my recollection) that offers sori around or over 1". JWHotsteelforge on eBay also makes a nice looking 1" sori blade.
