So I suppose this has already been done, but I'd like to start a thread for the discussion of dedicated two-handers. Not so much for the light and swift bastard swords or shorter long-swords, but the beefier heavy hitters with length and strength to really dish it out. Discussions might include the pros and cons of each in your personal opinion (not review length, just how they fit your hand and taste), what you've found them to be good for, and what you'd like to see them improve on. Also, this might be a good place to recommend specific models to other forumites. For the purposes of clarification, this is somewhat of an edge-oriented thread, Tucks need not apply Examples of swords I had in mind. Large lonswords like the Del Tin Swedish Two Hander, claymores of most lengths, Zweihanders (sorry for the bad spelling), earlier battle swords (specifically XII's and XIII's plus all their fun relatives). Share you two cents, speak your piece, and give us what's on your mind (if it requires two hands...)

From one bastard to another, some comparisons lend a sword better to handling with both hands. Of bastards I know well, some like the bruiser above could be better c;assified as a two hander. This can lend to a conundrum when these other heavy bastards line up with lithe swords such as the Del Tin 5157, a touch longer than other on this table but a pound or more lighter. While Arms&Armor does list the big guy as a bastard, any (even the big guys like me) that str\rt dancing with him realize it truly a two hander, if only to be compared as a touch more nimble for its length than a 60" claymore. Consider the A&A German Bastard a coupe of a zweihander. The Del Tin claymore at KOA is quite tempting but then I go unlimber the A&A GBS from my wal and realize I have never really needed another big brother. At that length, I would also well consider the bulk of the A&A English two hander. So, there you have it, my short two hander and my short estoc. Cheers Hotspur; quite close to pulling the trigger on nicer reproductions but my lists concern much smaller swords. Still, the claymore at KOA looks like it needs a home

www.deltin.net/2158.htmI don't own this one but I have handled it, and I must say that although it is definitely a real two hander it handles beautifully and it could be used with one hand but the length of the handle would be a bit of a problem for that.

Two handed swords are the best! mine is soo long i can use it like a spear and transition into huge hacking, chopping swings very quickly. there just simply isnt enough time to close the gap and get close enough before i cleave your dome or chop your legs or head off. plus my swings are soo hard and heavy theres no way you could block them without a rediculously badass shield, even then, no garuntee i wont just hack through it or break the shield arm. your only chance is to try to dodge, or run away. you just cant get in close enough. plus if anyone ever did get around my attack and close the gap i still have a dirk and a hand axe. my claymore is 7 ft long. blade is 4 inches wide, 7 at the tip. it will rip chainmail apart and the four widened inches at the tip end will cleave like a battle axe if not better since its soo long and will be swung faster.

When I did landsknecht reenacting, a buddy in the fahnlein had one of these zwiehanders: www.medievalcollectables.com/p-1075-german-landsknechte-flamberge-sword.aspxIt stood up pretty well to stage combat, and quite period-looking. However, it's a beast. You really need upper body strength to wield it. A good weapon for stage combat, but I'd say from experience that that's about all it's good for. --Edward P.S. In my profile photo, that thing on my right shoulder was a zwiehander with custom alterations. A good cheap weapon I found that has lasted surprisingly long, given that I paid only $150 for it.

speaking of the Del-Tin 2 handed claymore... friend, fellow antique collector and sword guilde member (Gary Hall) has an old, old Krupp steel DT claymore. We've dubbed it "big beastie" because it's just a frellin' 4 1/2 ft razor blade... yes... those are all antique basket-hilts and just a small view of what this man actually has of them...."big beastie" hanging a few down big beastie in action cheers, Bill

Well if it was, that makes it only that much more hilarious!
I've always loved the look of the big two-hander, but always realized it was too big for me to wield effectively.

I guess I fall more into the "dedicated two hander but not a pole-arm" camp. I really really REALLY can't wait for the Tinkerline Sword of War to come out. That's my idea of a gorgeous blade. Big enough to hit hard but small enough to be efficient. Gents, for your consideration, does anybody out there own any of the LPM Angus Trim blades? I feel like those would be prime for a fast two-hander.

Sean, we should start some sort of GSoW Fan Club. We've been posting about it like little schoolgirls after they've first seen Twilight.
I know most XIIIa's fall under the hand-and-a-half category, but I have big hands and there's enough space (plus some) for both my hands on most of that type. I really never understood how they weren't classified as two-handers.

We've been posting about it like little schoolgirls after they've first seen Twilight. LOL Now, I don't normally put down certain things like this, but Twilight is stupid. There. I. Said. It. So. Sue. Me. (yes, each of those is meant as a sentence. ;D) I mean, c'mon! I could SO take Edward! So, to tie this little rant into our subject matter, I'd just have to use a Hanwei Lowlander to chop little ol' Eddie into bite-sized epices for the werewolves. ;D -Slayer maybe I could start an 'I hate Twilight with a passion' club? Appreviated as the 'IHTWAP' Club, of course.

I am... so confused. I don't even know how to react to that... thing. Thanks for posting that pic Mordrent. I mean, damn.... weird. But that King Henry looks pretty cool! Maybe with slightly narrower guard....

That is seriously one fugly sword...It's like the missing link between a full two-hander and a two-handed sabre.

+1 for the picture Mordrent. Certainly not Bruce's claymore but very interesting.
