If you do a search for 'sword' you will see a link to what appears to be an old sword; the bloke selling it is in the U.K. - I'm very interested to hear everyone's thoughts; is it real? That is quite the price tag; in reading the auction I did not see anywhere that there is any type of authentication or certification, only that the sword was acquired 20 years ago from a family member.
Let's discuss.
Edit: I removed the auction title as I got dinged on that other forum for having an identifier; not sure what's up with that but just in case the same rule applies here, thought I'd be a bit proactive and remove it before I get smacked for it.

I'm very curious as to how he came up with such a price tag without experts evaluating and authenticating the sword....
Personally, I'd stay well away if it was $800 much less $ 80 000
Not sure I'd gamble on $80.....

LOL
I'd gamble on 80 (hell, I've done it more times than I care to admit to) but no more than that- once I pass $100 I take it personal.
I agree, am also very curious as to how he came about that price point. Might even ask him.

Marc, thanks for the correction- think I auto-assumed U.K...as I am semi-ignorant bout corrosive properties et al, red rust is an automatic disqualifier on antiques? Or just on antiques that are cared for as such?
I once bought a supposed antique off of eBay a few years back; I'll have to post some pics to get you guys' take on it. I called it a fake when I saw it, but only because it really looked like new rust to me. That was, including shipping, a $115 gamble.

Red rust is a damn good indicator of a modern "antique" ... hell that the wire is in tact at all is suspect to me.... However we can't really guess what the rust tewlls us , because we know NOTHING about this sword... No claim is made... its not attributed to any period, no date is even hinted at... All that we have is "Here we have an extremely old medieval sword which appears to have been a dug item at some point in the past" Sure... Extremely old is entirely subjective, right? How old is extremely old? 20 or 30 years? 40 years? 10,000,000 years? The wording does not even imply that the sword is from the midieval era.... just that is a medieval sword... which is indeed what this type of sword would be classified as... even a replica... it is a medieval pattern sword... "appears to be dug at some point" And yet the wooden handle is remarkably in tact.... wow.... Of course if I buried an item in my backyard for a month to "antique" it I could honestly say it had been "dug" at some point... And I could honestly say it was very rare, since it would be the ONLY replica sword I had ever buried in my yard and "antiqued" Mind you I'm not making any conclusive statements about the item, or the seller... just sharing abstract thoughts... I'm sure the seller is a fine fellow... As to the item... I have my doubts as to its veracity other than being exactly what the seller claimed it was... and he claimed nothing.... As to its worth.... well worth is subjective to I guess... as I was once taught, anything is worth exactly what you can get someone to pay for it.... Well in that case its worth nothing as far as I'm concerned... I'd not buy it....

Man, you had me crackin up- sounded like some stuff I'd say, especially that anything is worth exactly what you can get someone to pay for it as I had heard that as well. Think I'll ask him to quantify that asking price, maybe there's more to it.
I mean, he's either got a real piece or a real set depending on the authenticity of that sword.

I wonder why he put up pictures of his family. that pommel looks machined to me so it can't be THAT old. oh well, no way I would buy it even if I could. I don't believe there is anything about that sword that would make anyone want to pay that much money.

Well hell... you live in his state, so you can go take a look and tell us if his sword... or even his family for that matter... appears to be authentic.... LOL

I don't believe there is anything about that sword that would make anyone want to pay that much money. I dunno. It's amazing to me what sellers try to get away with on eBay. There must be a reason. There must be some small percentage of buyers that, seeing something they might want, jump in with both feet without hesitation. Case in point: Recently I saw what appeared to be a very nice old Buick convertible for sale. I think it was a 1953. Bright red with shiny chrome. A beautiful and very valuable collectors item! The guy was asking $200K +, and could conceivably get it. The problem was the pictures. Blurry and very poor quality. When I pointed this out to him as an improper way to display such a fine car he got very defensive. Said I must have a bad monitor, or be "inexperienced" with eBay, because everyone knows you can't post high quality pics there! Quite untrue on both points. So, who would even bother bidding on something as expensive as this without even being able to see it properly??? Then there is the old ploy of saying you're selling this "for a friend". This absolves you of any knowledge about what you're selling. Ask not, just bid!!! Unfortunately, eBay is unlikely to do anything about shady characters like this as it is they who make money for them.

Anyone who spends this kind of money on Ebay is quite frankly moron. surely if you are going to spend this kind of money you would want to see the item with your own eyes and have fairly strong evidence that it is what the seller said it is. even if that means spending a couple of thousand dollars investigating it first.

Anyone who spends this kind of mony on Ebay is quite frankly moron. I would appreciate it if you refrain from making such comments. Although the pictures are horrible, the blade is authentic and I am currently in negotiations with the seller. I don't know why you guys always have to be so mean, but it really hurts my feelings. I am really going to have to re-evalute whether or not I want to continue as a member here. Thanks a lot

Unless of course it’s the 1 April and then more fool me!
