Hey all,
Our tried and true "by the numbers" Review Template has been replaced with something a little different... check the new thread in the Reviews section for the full scoop:
/index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=9406
Because of this, we're going to be trying to figure out how to edit the reviews on the forum and the main site to reflect a "Pros, Cons & the Bottom Line" approach instead of the scores out of 5 that have been done before.
What would help us out a great deal is this - if you have done reviews on the forum, it would be a huge help if you went back and added a brief section at the end of the original review post that lists the main Pros and Cons of the sword, and gives the Bottom Line, i.e. recommendation for or against the sword. We'd ideally like to have all our reviews with this new section at the end to replace the numbers, so if you could find it in your hearts to help us out with that, we would really appreciate it! 10 minutes from each of you helping with this would save us hours of doing it ourselves.
If you do edit a review, please send us a PM so we can cross it off our list!
To quickly find your reviews, just use James Gall's handy Review Index:
/index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=8870
Hope you enjoy the new template!

Would it be all right if we still included numbers (at the very end), just so readers can get an extra bit?
I've got to say, though, that I love the new review template.

Thanks, guys!
I think that Paul should weigh in here as well (though he and I worked on this together) - some certainly find the numbers helpful. They are more helpful, though when the reviewer is highly experienced and can accurately gauge what a 5/5 handling sword *should* feel like... this method eliminates any "skewing" of the scores by a well-meaning and enthusiastic yet inexperienced reviewer... I still get embarrassed when I read my old reviews... :S

Ahh, now you know why I havent reviewed anything yet! I've been waiting to gather quite a bit more personal experience and general knowledge. The numbers were very intimidating when I was newer.

I still get embarrassed when I read my old reviews... :S Are you saying you don't still think the Generation 2 Irish Bastered Sword is the coolest sword EVER? ;D

The thing was, we found that the numbers system worked fine when we only had a handful of reviewers. But now, especially for beginners, it is either too intimidating (as Kidcasanova noted) or the reviewer is so blown away by their first ever functional sword that they can't help but list it as a 5/5. The other issue we found was that the scores can become somewhat meaningless, i.e. is this a 4/5 compared to other swords in the same price range or a 4/5 regardless of range? Only the reviewer knows, and if their experience is lacking and they have nothing to compare it to... (you get the picture). So by using the new 'pros and cons' format we avoid abstraction as much as possible, and neatly sum up what has been covered in the review so that the reader can make the most informed decision possible. Kudos to Dan for coming up with the idea! - Paul

Right both reviews updated, funny that my sakura review Paul had commented on about the KI BBQ and that was back in June! Hopefully that will still go ahead when everything comes out

I tried to click on the link to find our reviews we've posted in the past and it said there was an error, that that page does not exist. Freebooter
