Longsword or Arming sword?
I've owned the arming sword, and it's very light, and very fast. But the POB is also far forward enough to allow for really powerful cuts. Thrusts are pretty good, and it tracks pretty well for an earlier arming sword. Honestly, the sword will do whatever you need it to.
I haven't handed the longsword, so I can't say. I do know that it received very favorable reviews from some really knowledgeable members. Check out the Review Index for them, there's videos in the reviews to you can see how it handles. Not quite the same as holding it yourself, but it should give you an idea.

Hanwei STILL has issues with the edges on the tinkerline for the most part. They are getting better, but putting a good edge yourself will be best.
As for the gen 2 tempering issue...well the issue is that it's tempered soft. Well more likely it has softened during some rather agressive grinding for the distal tapering. However slightly on the soft side isn't really a bad thing either.

I dunno about the Black Prince... but my Gen 2 Chaos sword was PERFECT. The perfect edge right from the factory, cut GREAT... an awesome sword. Of everything I have sold recently, and will sell in the near future... it's the one I miss the most.

Well, yes the choas sword doesn't have a distal taper so lacks the softening from agressive grinding for a distal taper . But yes of the sub 300 swords, I like the factory edge on gen 2 the best. Even the blacksmith I visit liked the edge on the gen 2 a lot.

Even the blacksmith I visit liked the edge on the gen 2 a lot. The Chaos sword was a beast, no doubt about it. At 4lbs it was WAY to heavy for it's size and psudo type (being that it was a fantasy peice)... however the really large handle really helped me hande the blade so that it never felt too heavy. It cut very well, and was as tough as all hell. I miss it...

I've really been thinking about it... but that would be stupid. I sold it for less then they sell for... so if I buy another to replace the one I sold at a loss then I'm just componding that loss.

Sean has his eyes on another big two-hander. Thats very true... but lucky for me, and my wallet, that one won't be out anytime soon. If it were out right now, I wouldn't be able to afford it. Not without selling another pile of swords and stuff that is... As to the 'if it makes me happy'... it's sort of a lose/lose for me. If I DON'T buy it, I miss it and wish I had it again. If I DO buy it, I feel like a complete moron for selling the first one and buying another and lossing a metric ass-ton of money in the prosess. I can't win here.

I know they talk about buyers regret, but I think sellers regret hurts more. I feel for ya. Probably the best advise is to never look back.

I know your regret howler, I wish I had never sold my sakura and buying a new one would be $300 more than I paid for the first one and then I would feel like a complete bourke because I sold the first one in the first place, when all it probably needed was a bit of getting used to. Hindsight is 20/20

Just to tempt you, here's the VA Longsword in action. I can easily use it one handed.
To BloodWraith: I disagree that smoothing out a secondary bevel is easier than starting from scratch. I've done both and so far correcting the secondary bevel has been much more of a pain in the ass.

I havent read any reviews of the Cold Steel Bastard sword, but it certainly is an attractive piece. I have the cold steel sword and can confirm the crappy hilt construction. I knew this when I bought it, with intent to modify it. /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=7789 Then there's Hanwei's Tinkerline Early Medieval Single Hand Sword (say that five times fast!), which is also supposed to be a great sword for the money. I did a review on this sword, the blade, and handling were realy good. The biggest flaw was the tip which was unsharpend. Here's a link: /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=9143 If it were me (I am also into single handed swords), I would buy the Valiant Armoury Practical Arming sword. But since the new shipment hasnt arrived yet, I'll leave that up to you. The Practical Longsword is also a good sword. They're both around the same price as the Cold Steel sword (the Arming sword is cheaper). I'm also big on single handed swords, waiting for a shipment of swords can be painful. One benifit is that this new shipment will have real leather, better blade geometry, and the threaded rods will be drawn out parts of the tang (the threaded rod failed on mine, it took a few hours with a dremel, and acetylene torch to fix. I wrote about it but can't find the link right now.) So to sum up the problems that the first generation had will be fixed. My advice is if you can afford it (you'll have some time to save up) get both,if not the single hander. and get a two sword display stand, or a pair of wall hangers. ps. Thanks kid for bringing up all the points I needed/could address.
