Hi, I am new to this forum and I have been very interesting in purchasing my first sword. For a while I have wanted to do so, but now I'm even more determined to have a sword to my name ;D Of course, I want to make sure I make a smart, thought out purchase before I plunge, and I thought what better way than to get advice from does who know best... For a while now I have been wanting a medieval 1 handed sword; not very fancy or anything, but more of a simple Norman type sword or so. I got very interested in the Marshal sword as it seems like a very nice sword; not over the top, and not to simple also. However, I was taken back by the reviews on it's poor edge (minimal sharpness), so I started looking elsewhere. So, recently I have become interested in cold steel's hand and a half sword. www.trueswords.com/cold-steel-handandahalf-sword-88hnh-p-1961.html I saw cold steel's video of the sword and it sure seems to be a really good sword, but I have also heard some bad reviews on some of the construction. So I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this word, and if anyone has some words of wisdom in my path to finding that perfect budget minded sword. Any advice is appreciated .

I havent read any reviews of the Cold Steel Bastard sword, but it certainly is an attractive piece. If it were me (I am also into single handed swords), I would buy the Valiant Armoury Practical Arming sword. But since the new shipment hasnt arrived yet, I'll leave that up to you. The Practical Longsword is also a good sword. They're both around the same price as the Cold Steel sword (the Arming sword is cheaper). Then there's Hanwei's Tinkerline Early Medieval Single Hand Sword (say that five times fast!), which is also supposed to be a great sword for the money. If you do get the Cold Steel, definitely do a review for us. I'd be very interested in hearing about it. PS: Welcome to the forum!

I would also recomend either the VA Practical Arming sword (if you want a single handed weapon) or Long Sword (if you want one for one or to handed use.) The Cold Steel sword looks attractive in the pictures... but I have no experince with it. My Experinces with the VA Arming sword has been great, and my experinces with Valiant Armoury has been MORE then great. I have not yet handled their practical Long Sword... but others have and a few of them have said it's one of the nicest swords they have ever cut with. You can't go wrong with the new Valiant Armoury stuff, in my opinion.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I will definitely look into it as both seem like 2 great alternatives. If I do go with either one of does, it will be a tough decision as I first wanted a single handed sword, but I like the ideas of a hybrid (bastard). By any chance would anybody have some recommendations in regards to good places to buy these swords online?

You can pre-order the Valiant Armoury Practical Arming and Longswords right here at the SBG store. You can also get em from Kult of Athena, Sword Nation, and Arms of Valor. All 4 great vendors with great customer service. Allthough I did have one grumpy experince with Kult of Athena once... but almost EVERYONE has nothing but nice things to say about them.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely check these places out.
Btw: Thanks for the sword recommendations, I've been checking them out and they look exactly like what I'm looking for. Right now I'm leaning towards the long sword. I plan on checking out some reviews and check does online stores. ;D

from what I've heard, cold steel is hit and miss. Some models are totally awesome! And some are complete bags of suckiness. however, from your description of a 1 handed Norman styled sword, these might interest you. Enjoy www.darksword-armory.com/1315.htmlwww.darksword-armory.com/1304.htmlwww.darksword-armory.com/1305.htmlwww.darksword-armory.com/1306.htmlwww.darksword-armory.com/1307.html this one in particular is called the Norman sword www.darksword-armory.com/1333.htmlwww.darksword-armory.com/1344.htmland, if you click "sword gallery" in the top right corner, you can see all of their swords Here is Paul's store, where most of the swords above are also available for purchase. Great customer service, and free shipping! sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/darksword.htmlif you want an even simpler sword, you might consider a VA practical sword. Unfortunately, only comes sharp :/ however I hear that they are releasing something soon that is available dull sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/VA-arming-sword.htmlor a Hanwei tinker line sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/ems.htmlwelcome to the forum homey skillet! okeedokee then, I'm done

I'd avoid the Cold Steel Hand and a Half, I've seen several cases where the pommel fell off on minimal force. Seems to be a construction issue that they may or may not have been fixed. I'd go with one of the VA"atrim"practicals. I have an a LS and a Arming sword that have served me well. You can also get them right here at the SBG store.

Are you looking for a bastard? what is your maximum price that you can spend upto?
If you are looking for a reasonably cheap single hander you can't go past the windlass arming sword, it is unanimously agreed (from what I have seen) to be one of Windlass best swords they've ever made. Depending on your price range, I would suggest an Albion squire line bastard if that is your thing.

Kult of Athena stil has Verneuil. while it is a pretty sword, I hear it has some structural integrity problems.

I havent heard any negative things about that model, Musical. Though I'd definitely be interested if you've got a link so where ever it was stated.

Yep, what is your price range ? There's a lot of interesting bastards available under 500$. Check out the Atrims on Christian Fletcher's web site, but i dont know if those exceed what your willing to pay. The VA/atrims are a very good quality/price option if plain a bit as are the Tinker's Hanweis ( altough as for the Tinker i only held a two handed a couple of minutes in a store... so not much experience with that one). Check out also the Kris Cutlery Teutonic and if your are on a budget check out what Windlass have to offer, there's a review up about the Erbach.

Thanks for all the replies! I've been checking other swords out, and I believe the VA Practical swords are more within my range. I would rather not spend more than $300 dollars on my first sword ( I also am planing to buy a home brew draft system). I was wondering, do you have to usually wait quite a while to receive the VA practical swords after ordering one online? It seems they are almost always out of stock. What is the usual wait time if so?
I checked out the Albion swords, they sure are beautiful. Unfortunately, to far past my price range.
BTW: Thanks for the info on the CS Hand and a Half. I will definitely steer away from it as it seems to have a bit of a week construction.
