A while back I talked Sonny Suttles out of the guard and pommel from a broken Valiant Armoury Castile. It's a massive guard and heavy pommel. And the guard is inlet for the blade shoulders that are 2.25 inches wide. In short, I didn't have a blade that was wide enough to fill the inletting on the guard. But I finally got my ATrim Maker's Mark Flared Shoulders Type XII sword last week. And the blade shoulders were even wider than the inletted slot in the Castile guard. This inspired me to do a slight bit of shoulder cutting-down to fit the two together. Everything fitted nicely, but the guard was just too big and bulky for such a light blade. And the pommel is WAY too massive for this sword. But I got the idea of cutting the guard down into an earlier style of curved Viking guard. I'm still not completely satisfied, but I think it's a good start. Thoughts?...

The guard does look a little thick, but I wouldn't sweat over it. Overall I am impressed.

I thought the blade was a bit too short for the crossguard in the first pic....and then I scrolled to the second picture. Oh yeah, it looks sweeeet.

Perhaps you could hex grind down the guard like you did on your $300 ATrim and remove some of the weight/meat, and even add some detail work - then mill off the risers on either side of the pommel to make it more of a flattened wheel.

I think it looks pretty good, Mike. How's it handle?

The handling is sweet. Very close to the 1315, but with a slight bit more weight. Cuts like a dream. I am actually going for more of a late Viking shape of the grip, much like the Albion Jarl guard except slightly longer. So I have a bit more grinding to do to the back of the guard to thin it a bit more front-to-back. I agree that the pommel is inappropriate. I love this I pommel shape... but with the sharp edges soften, and on a different sword. I am tempted to grind the Castile pommel down into a flattened and smoothed "lozenge", until the weight is correct for the right balance. Thanks for the input and ideas. This has gotten me thinking a bit more...

With such a beefy guard and pommel, I imagine point control is no issue at all; cuts like a dream you say? Looks like you may have made it a better sword than when you got it- and for that, you get +1.
Edited to add: you know Mike, it is hard to tell the difference between your mods and original pieces as far as over all fit and finish are concerned.
Seeing as you have such a wide collection I'm going to assume you're not hurting for money, but if ever you were, I think you'd have a fairly thriving business modding, sharpening and polishing swords, for real.

good work Mike, I vote you cut it down. I like the Albion Jarl idea you have, go for it. +1
