Someone somewhere makes a circuit board, I can't remember who it was, that in addition to doing all of the sound and motion stuff fades the LED on and off in such a way that with the right film lining the inside of the "blade" it looks almost like the on/off effect for the normal ForceFX series. All I do remember about it is that it was kinda pricey.

Why not just make the blades out of HDPE?

HDPE? Also yeah that would be the same sound board, the newest version. Information is in one of those forums.

I got the Ultrablades mail-in conversion around christmas and I'm totally happy with it. My friend and I go around campus and fight at night sometimes. Last time the cops yelled at us because traffic was getting too distracted, but whoo it was fun. The video is of my roommate and his friend. The red one is the conversion. Notice how it lights up the entire room.

i think when i make the one i plan on making (as soon as i have the funds for it) i'm gonna use a white led so i can just swap out color filters for different blade colors

So... I've a question for all you lightsaber fans... Some friends of mine hope to make a Star Wars fan film soon... they have asked me to be a part of it... (Probably due to the fact that... despite the fact I don't consider myself a big time star wars geek, I down own a lot of swords and I even have to Jedi robes. Heh.) I've decided I'm going to help them out as much as I can... but there are 3 lead roles, they want me for one of them, and I am not sure if I'm going to do that or not. Anyway... what we need is lightsabers that you can really FIGHT with... something as durable as, say, the RSW that Lancelot Chan sells. However... we need a hilt assembly that looks real, but can have the sparing 'blade' attached later for dueling. We can add the effects in after the fact, like most of the fan films do, we just need something that will be empty when hanging on a Jedi's belt... but when attached will be durable and tough enough for some truly awesome fight scenes. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. ;D

The blade is detatchable, theres no sound, and you can throw pretty much anything at it. www.ultrasabers.com/category_s/2.htm

if you are going to rotoscope the blades then i have couple suggestions for hilts
1) randomsabers.com sells practice sabers... they're just aluminum tubes with a set bolt and you can buy carbon fiber rods from them... the plain tube would be easy to add some "greeblies" (bits and bobs to help get the look right)
2) make em yourself you can do a decent looking hilt out of things like plumbing pipe and conduit couplers for about 20 bucks or so... easiest dueling hilt i've done is 1.5 sink pipe, and 1.25 conduit coupler's you can mix and match parts in different ways and then i used a pvc pipe on the inside of it... had to wrap some duct tape around it to get the spacing correct so it would sit centered within the tube and then you can stick a dowel or buy some polycarbonate rods to put in there... all you need to hold it in is a screw (or 2 if you prefer... kinda like the whole mekugi thing) drilled through all the pipes that you can tighten against whatever you are using for a blade
i still have one of the sabers i made from sink pipe and conduit pieces i'll post a pic of it once i'm home tonight and you can get an idea of how easy it is to make a decent looking saber... i think the one i'll be taking a pic of cost me about 25 30 dollars to make of course i had left over pvc pipe for the inside from making other sabers

Shadow here are a few pics of the one hardware saber i still have. not exactly movie quality but you can see that it's pretty easy to do a decent looking hilt for a fan film on a low budget... this saber is 2 1.25inch conduit couplers a 1.5 inch sink tube 1.5 inch sink tube coupler and a few other bits and bobs like different screws and pop rivets. the blue grip is just a strip of blue fabric i wrapped around the hilt. and the black strips on the middle coupler are a kind of black floor mat that is very very cheap and easy to work with for lightsaber construction. hope these help you and you're friends. edit: ok the pictures don't want to show up on the page not sure why i've posted pics before anyways here is the link to the pictures for anyone interested s481.photobucket.com/albums/rr172/Ed_Woj/?action=view¤t=DSCI0001.jpg

aceltone: And I've got two Jedi robes... so I guess I'm twice the geek. Flashingsteel: Thanks for the info! If anyone else has any info on where to find some hard-sparring worth lightsabers (need not light up, effects will be added later... just hilts and removable blades that will hold up to solid sparring) or ideas on how to make em, please share! The more options I can give these guys, the better... And now... a few of my faovite Star Wars Themed Vids... And of course... A guilty pleasure... there is a whole series of these... Lastly, this one I can't find on YouTube... www.atom.com/funny_videos/jedi_hunter/?yref=yssp Heh heh... ;D
