If they were tougher, I'd have to have one.

I've got a bunch of these. The "blades" are actually really tough and the connections to the handles are adequate as well. The issue is with the l.e.d.s that line the blades--a good whack right on one will destroy the light and leave a dark spot. What people do is customize them, replacing the string of l.e.d.s in the blade with one really bright one in the base--I've got a couple like this. There are a number of sellers on ebay that sell these if you want to look into more. They are a lot of fun.

What about a sword version? ie full metal detailed hilt and some sort of durable carbon steel 'blade' (rounded I guess) painted up with luminesent. Copyright concerns aside for a second of course...

I can attest to that; my brother, father, sister and I engaged in a 4 way lightsaber duel last Christmas- all was going well until I got a dark spot roughly 1/3 of the way from the tip of the blade. Good thing is, these things supposedly come with a lifetime warranty so I'll let you know how that goes, once I send it out. They are great fun, tho. Edited to add: Stromloswordsusa, if you do a search on eBay for 'competition lightsaber' or something like that, you should get a couple hits from some guys who have made their own, so to speak. I thought about getting one but then I got a FX one for Christmas so that canceled that out.

the blades are ok... however you can modify them quite easily... i'm a star wars fan in addition to a sword fan so um yea... actually built a few lightsaber props a few times... but those fx sabers are great cuz a few modifications and you can make it suitable for some very very hard sparring... the use polycarbonate for the blades which is the same stuff they make bullet proof glass from but the stock blades are just too thin... but you can swap it out and replace the lights with luxeon led's and a thicker polycarbonate blade and then you got yourself a ultra bright lightsaber prop thats up for some hard sparring.... and it's AWESOME!

^^^ What he said. Ultra saber conversations makes them almost impossible to break (plus you can remove the blade after you do convert which you cant out of the box). They have videos on their site of them running them over with a cary and such. The downside is you lose the on/off effect and it just becomes literally on/off. Rather than have the lights actually run up and down the blade.
I own three, Darth Mual, Darth Vader (ANH version), and Luke Skywalker (ANH version). The Mual one is HUGE and it comes apart like the "battle damage". So you actually have to buy two halves to put it together. As you can see in the video you end up with awesome looking effects without editing anything.

That is life; but you shouldn't let the idea of ridicule stop you from doing or acquiring something you know you want. For the record, I'm 36, gainfully employed, happily married, proud father of two teenage girls- I guess from your standpoint, I should be embarrassed, right? That is SO not the case for me; we had a blast and the neighbors on our block and the one adjacent to us came out to watch the spectacle! I'd attach a pic here but it looks like I have to host it somewhere else first- too much work so take my word for it!

on the embarassment note... he's right who cares if you wanna own it do it... like i posted above i actually threw together a few lightsber props of my own and not only wore them to EP III but donned a full jedi costume as well... and ya no something i actually got more people asking me about how i made everything and in awe rather than snickering and ridiculing... though i'm sure some of that took place but who cares i enjoyed myself. if you want one go for it

Heh, I wasn't being completely serious. Trust me, I've always been a geek and quite cynical. I can take people laughing at what I do. (often, I laugh with them) I agree 100%. Heck, take swords in general. Around here no one's ever heard of someone collecting swords and backyard cutting. I tend to get odd looks if I mention I do that. I actually kind of enjoy it, because if someone acts like that, they almost always stop and get a lot quieter when they get their hands on one of my katana! Oh yeah, karma for you two (well, once I can give two :F) for making good points.

I know this feeling, people look odd at me but to date I have got my roommate, his brother, my girlfriend, her 8 year old niece, and my dad to all cut and they all enjoyed it. My roommate gets excited when I tell him I am going to be doing some cutting.

Oh yeah, karma for you two (well, once I can give two :F) for making good points. Thanks; how do you give someone karma? Anyways, I understood where you were coming from having once been the same way- worried about what others thought more than my own desires. As I got older I realized that its fine if it works for you, but ultimately, you gotta do what you gotta do. I get weird looks from time to time, especially if you show something out of context (like me wearing a helm while in modern street clothes lets say) but hey, its all good- I know what I like to do. That my wife indulges me and gets a kick out of when I don my armor and swing swords about is more than enough incentive for me to continue! Edited to add: Tsafa, she most certainly did. Beastly, vile woman! That is a move my sister would've performed.

Hey, TEP! (do you mind if I call you that? it's so much faster typing your intitials...) You give someone karma by clicking the little 'EXALT' over on the left of their post, under the avatar. However, you can only give out one karma an hour. I hope this helps! ;D -Slayer
