That is genuinely frightening.... Please, hold on to your sword.

Yikes, poor fellow in the back got hit in the leg/hip/waist/lower body somewhere. Doesn't look like they were cut, though... So much for this guy's demo. (the look on his face is pretty amusing despite it all...)

It looks like it hit him with either the handle or the flat of the blade.

this reminds me of the video of the guy on TV trying to sell katanas say how tough these ones are while smacking it onto a table. The blade breaks and stabs him in the shoulder....

Wow, that could have been dramatic to say the least...but since nobody got hurt (it seems) I watched it again and laughed a bit...that is a definite "fail"! wow. Impressive in the fail category. Then again, I did my part once...a Gen2 8th century viking slipped from my grip and went flying away...and it was very scary even if nobody was in the path of the flying blade of death...just by imagining the worse...
Another reminder we have to always be sure nobody is in the plausible path of a sword that goes airborn (by breaking or otherwise)!

anyone else seen the video of the guy lying down with a cucumber over his throat and another guy walks up with a katana and is supposed to the cucumber in half without hurting the guy? He cuts ones and it doesn't go through and so he cuts a second time. The cucumber falls and then blood just starts flowing from this guys throat.

I thought it was more of a gut shot? Maybe my memory is bad. Either way I don't feel like watching it for a ten thousandth time. anyone else seen the video of the guy lying down with a cucumber over his throat and another guy walks up with a katana and is supposed to the cucumber in half without hurting the guy? He cuts ones and it doesn't go through and so he cuts a second time. The cucumber falls and then blood just starts flowing from this guys throat. Yep, guy gets up and walks off, then somebody stops him to try to treat the bleeding. I seem to recall hearing he may have fainted afterward, but I don't think he did for some reason... There were numerous reports and speculation. Good times.

Yeah, Random, I believe that you're correct. It hits him in the right side, from what I remember...

Man that was scary (funny ). I do believe if I was in the audience I would have left. Thanks for the video. I make my kids watch these so they hopefully realize Daddy's not nuts with safety. And swords are COOL , but dangerous.

Wow! What really blows my mind is that they let him have the sword back and go for another try after that.

Wow.. How do you even manage that?? I might understand if it was some kind of slick handle + sweaty palms.. But a katana? On his first cut? Accidents happen, of course. Still, I'd like to know how he was holding that thing.

Yikes! I can only speculate on how amazingly embarrassing that was for that poor fellow... then he flubs one of the cuts afterward also... not looking good. SO lucky no one was hurt... the guy that got smacked by the handle could have just as easily have been a kid run through by the point... that was VERY dangerous and VERY luck situation. Man.... Yeah. Nothing underscores the need for safety more then a good ol' fashioned dose of 'THIS is what could happen."

Still, I'd like to know how he was holding that thing. I'd imagine he was holding it like one holds a katana with the thumb and forefinger loosely circumscribing the tsuka , gripping with the pinky and ring finger , but not real tightly... A proper grip is really kind of a loose affair... its understandable how it could slip ... I've never done it with a sword.. but I've had it happen with a golf club, and the dynamics of the grip are quite similar.... This just shows how a momentary slip in concentration can be deadly with swords... 400 years ago, if he'd been facing an opponent that slip would have cost him his life... as it is it almost cost someone elses....
