Hey guys, I have found the Hanwei Godred Viking sword a very good price but I can't find any reviews of it. I think it's one of the most beautiful viking swords I've ever seen and am considering buying it but I want to be sure I'm not just buying a beautiful piece of junk If I'm just missing it and their is a review please post a link, if not, if any of you own this sword please give me your impressions!

I dunno if there is a review... but I have heard from people who have owned them that... while they ARE very attractive (at least in my opinion) they are not very durable at all, and have failed at cutting even light targets. I have no direct, in hand experince with this sword tho.

I sold mine a while ago, but while I had it I loved it. Never had a problem with it at all.
I'm afraid it suffers the same fate as many of Hanwei's blades, particularly the Euros, in that you get both good and bad ones.

Marc: You didn't like the woven leather grip eh?

My fittings and scabbard are on their second blade. I must figure i like them at least some. Mine was pretty early, maybe even in the first batch(es). I ripped one blade in half and it was determined to be a heat treat issue. Mine and many have come through with just the lead eight inches (+-) sharpened but a nice job of that much of it. If you were to run some threads on the Godfred through the search engine of just about any of the sword forums, my recantation and many more will surface. I believe I even posted Angus Trim's thoughts about this sword on the www.netsword.com archives. Chen himself relates the swords are not for heavy cutting. I have gone further than light with both blades, one ripped in half. The bare blades that floated around for awhile is where I came up with a replacement. Considering I had originally paid a bargain price for it, adding another buck for the replacement blade has balanced out my experience and cost with it. All in all, I have always liked the way this one handles and it has some great tip cutting potential on light targets. That doesn't include baseballing 2 litre water bottles. It is a pretty package overall and remounted a bare blade because I liked it as a pretty package that handles nicely. Again, a search of this board and others with Godfred in the thread header will pop up everywhere. I won't go through posting them all over again because they are a bit of a shock for some to see. They are out there though. Slayer will find 'em for you Cheers Hotspur; I did break it in tough use but it should not have ripped apart as it did.

Lookie heah for what it's worth. Marc, I like what you did with the grip on yours, I never cared for the stock one.

I like the look of the stock grip... very unique... but I question it's long term durability.

The grip looked beefy to me, and I've got fairly large hands. I like what Marc's done to his.

Oh well, thanks agian for the info and saving me from a potentialy dissipointing buy It's more a question of dead blows, which is what botched cuts equates to. More often than not, there is some user error in the equation. It's a darn good thing them pesky nor landers never had to defeat a bunch of plastic bottles. Cheers Hotspur; why always blame the sword first?

Yeah seriously though, I know ancient warriors were more careful with their swords than in the movies but never the less they did come in contact with steel helmets, other swords, wooden shields, metal shield bosses, not to mention what it was for, muscle and bone! The Vikings were a tough people and I want my first viking blade to be a tough sword. A light wimpy viking sword just seems like a oxymoron
