Made by windlass, www.kultofathena.com/product~item~500918.htmI've seen a few threads online regarding this sword but not about the handling. I've sold most of my collection to fund an upcoming trip and decided (with the wife) that I was going to add one" feel better" purchase to my to do list. Has anyone personally handled this sword? If so what were your impressions on weight distribution/handling, hardness/temper and (if any) thoughts on blade geometry. Thanks

I am typically a love the one you're with kind of buyer and user. I knd of like the looks of both this blade and the Windlass Revolutionary sabre. However, I am not at all thrilled with the hilts. I am not an owner of either but would not dismiss that they might be a lot of fun to play with.
Virtually all the swords I have ever owned have been individual experiences in getting the best of, or realizing the worst of a purchase. Consider that times of yore offered even less exposure to what a sword might handle like and one gets used to individual examples.
I say go with your impulse, expecially if it is not a first sword. The Windlass offred blades tnd to be a little soft but generally durable. the sharpening from KOA probably comes right from MRL/AC and distributes the Windlass goods.
Cheers
Hotspur; this one has grown on my looks list but Ihaven't handled it

I agree about the hilts, and intend to do a little modification (at least slimming down the guard) on this saber. I've been looking at this one for a while (have been craving a good saber for some time now), almost had enough free money to try to pick up one of the nicer antique offerings on e-bay but, fate (my bank) had a different plan. Oh well, I'll be sharpening this one myself and adding it to the cutting line up. Aside from the differences from an original ( Not that I've ever been too concerned with historical accuracy on production swords...) shown/discussed in this myarmoury thread www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=7854 it seems to be a nice repro of this style. I expect/hope it be a decent handling user once I get the handle tightened up. Windlass blades are typically between 1065 to 1095 and between 48 - 52 rc, (according to their website) so I'm hoping they're usual heat treat comes through with this model, but apparently it's never been a popular model (as far as I'm aware) as there isn't a review to be found. Thanks for your input Sir.

I do not possess this sword nor have I handled it, but, from looking at pictures of it, the grip might be a bit too thin in hand for good control of the blade...I make this speculation because it reminds me the proportions of the grip on their pirate cutlass (the model based on the French "cuiller-a-pot") which I found to be too thin, of octogonal section, giving it an awkward handling...when I find the time, I'll thicken it to make it more oval shaped, I think it'll help it's handling...
Again this is just speculation from my part based only on the appearance of the saber on pictures...anyway, it's not a tough modification to perform if ever it was to be needed...In fact, I might end up buying it (I too was eyeing it since it came out) and we'll see...

Hi Reflingar You're bang on with regards to the grip. If it were a few inches bigger I feel the responsiveness of it would be increased a thousandfold. Unfortunately it just doesn't feel good when cutting. A crying shame really as it's quite nice to look at!

Hey Chris,
Shame about the cutting abilities of this saber...and weird also: it looks like quite a cutter actually..
Glad that my speculation was spot on thought...sometimes you can say alot on the handling and balance of a sword just by looking at pictures, but of course it all depends on the picture, it's angle, the lightning and all...and sometimes also you realize your impression ends up being off when you actually handle it and end up surprised...but very often, I look at pictures of a given sword and just know that something will be off, be it balance or otherwise...
I hope that after I modify the grip on my cutlass to a more oval shape, it will respond in another way altogether...but as it is, pretty much blade heavy and tends to spin in the hand...
