I have handled neither, but I would recommend the VAtrim all the way. That extra pound and a half on the Windlass is what prevents me from buying it. The VAtrim looks like a really good option, and I would not pick the Windlass over it in my opinion.

As I've been reading more reviews I think I've settled on that one. Thanks for the input Dan!

I’ve not handled either so cannot speak from experience. I suppose it depends on what you want out of it? Do you want something pretty or something practical? If I was buying one I would be very concerned about the weight of the windlass sword. 3 lb 7.2 oz is very heavy for a sing handed sword. I think unless your built like a brick outhouse you’re going to find that your arms and shoulder tire very quickly, and the blade is to clumsy for fine control.
The Atrim on the other hand weighs only 2lbs!!! which is extremely light which leaves me wondering what the blade presence is like and how whippy it will be? Having said that i would choose the Atrim over the windlass any day of the week.

Having said that i would choose the Atrim over the windlass any day of the week. I wouldn't worry about whippiness with a blade designed by Gus Trim! In the first batch of arming swords the feedback has been almost 100 percent positive. The only issue was sharpness I believe... Hi Poo mate In terms of practicality and reliability I'd go with the Atrim. I believe the Atrim practical arming sword is only 6 dollars more than the Christian sword? Don't get me wrong. I love my windlass Erbach, it's razor sharp and cuts like a dream but if I had to take a sword in to battle I'd probably take an Atrim .

I have an VA "Atrim" practical Arming sword from the first batch. Whippy is not a word that has ever entered my mind when using it. It's a definite stiffy. Just hearing you all mention it made me go out a cut a couple bottle just now. The bottom of one's still sitting on the stand. MUHAAAA! Mine arrived very very sharp. btw. Aww, heck, see for yourself here. Thats how it was when I first got it.

I think you've made the right choice. I have a tuned version of the VAtrim arming and I've heard the new batch will be identicle to it. what can I say, I LOVE my VAtrim best sword I own bar-none. perhaps you have seen this post of mine in a recent thread: /index.cgi?board=euromedieval&action=display&thread=9007&page=1#144276 I was cutting with the sword right out of the box. no secondary bevel, no sharpening needed, just pick-up-and-cut. I really think that to get a better (or even different but equal) arming sword than this one you'd have to go well above the $300 range we normally cover.
as for being whippy, it's about as whippy as a Cheness Kaze, or for those of you not familiar with katana, it's about as whippy as a brick.
so, um, yeah. . . it's good.

I have a question... I thought you could not sharpen your Gothic Two Handed sword because your parents didn't want you to have a sharp sword? The VA Arming sword is SHARP... so, they change their minds?

Parents are mauling it over right now, and I've posted a thread asking how to not kill myself with a sharp sword in the "training" area

Well, Poo, my cats laugh at me when I break out my little buckler. As to sword safety, just so happens I made a video about that very subject a while back. Have a Look. Also here a thread on sword safety.

Ric, let the cats laugh I LOVE your little buckler and I think you should use it more.
earlier in this thread weight was mentioned as 2 pounds for the practical arming. that's strange to me since mine weighs 2 pounds 10 ounces. certainly not a light-weight but still very agile.

It was me who said it is 2 pounds, I took this from SBG store where the stats are recorded as: Overall Length: 38.25" Blade Length: 31.25" Handle Length: 4.5" Blade Width at Guard: 1.75" Sword Weight: 2lbs Center of Gravity: 5.5" This is either an error or it is very very light.

Thanks, Tom, I shall use my little buckler in your honor at the next oportunity.
Ahhh, the weight, that went right by me. I put mine at 2 1/2 lbs using my bathroom scale. I really need to get a good scale and some calipers.
