I was just wondering if anyone had handled this sword before. I noticed it was going cheap on ebay this week, and since I just missed the last Towton on sale at MRL ( ), I wanted to know if the Mercenary sword was worth the reduced price (147$+ shipping, I think). I want to start WMA longsword training, and I was looking for an appropriate and affordable training sword for forms-around 150 dollars. Just from the description, the Hanwei Mercenary seems a bit heavy for a longsword. Is it perhaps a true two-hander? Oh, and as this is my first post, hello everyone!

That's not a practice sword. It's a sharp so do not get it for WMA practice. If you want a WMA sword on the cheap, get the hanwei practical hand and a half for a bit over 100 bucks at KoA.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!
He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back.
And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. ;D

It's 'The Jabberwocky' by Lewis Carroll... I think from 'Threw the Looking Glass' from way back when. Always was my favotie little poem. Since our OP is 'Jabberwock' I couldn't help myself. ;D

I've briefly handled it in a store, and it seemed quite heavy to me. I didn't like it.
The hanwei hand and a half practical is a very good way to start, although the current version is ni-unsharpenable (for safety reasons). It's only flaw is that the handle is a bit short for longsword work, but it's still serviceable. It's usable for one handed drills too.

Hanwei practical hand and a half are very good swords for WMA, that is what I used to use when doing it. They have good tracking in the point and they are a nice light sword that will allow for lots of repetition before your arms get tired.

OP: as some others have said, you don't want a sharp for practice- stick to blunts, you'll keep the cuts, gashes and other assorted wounds to a minimum.
