Cool!! I'd give $50 just to see how that thing handles! I just don't know how to say how nice that looks. I wonder how it would be like if it was 2 handed.

Very nice! I've always wanted to put a Euro guard on a Katana....never thought of a basket hilt. If I do one Im keeping the giant tang on it and peening it! ;D Something like this... ;D ;D ;D Kinda like a Falchion with the cutting power of the katanas tip.

I have to confess, my first reaction is why? To me it just looks odd. Mind you, I do like the Japanese military swords with katana blades and knuckle-bow hilts, and this is the same idea, I guess, just taken a bit further. It's certainly interesting, though! It would be fun to see how it handles. Thanks for posting it Slavia! Cheers Marc E

I sure do like it.
I know, I know...history, culture, etc., etc.
But, esthetically, looking at it right now, I like.

Didn't someone around here modify a Tenchi to a more European-esque handle once? I can't seem to find it...
Edit: AHA! Found it: /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=5335

BURN THE HERETIC!
Actually . . . I'd been thinking of something similar. I looked around at the various cheap factory sabers, and everyone said "Ooh icky poo" in terms of accurate distal taper, etc. Then I looked at the vast array of dirt cheap "katana-style" blades, and I thought, "You know, if you were to take a nice cheap 'katana-style' blade and adapt some Euro-style features, such as a new grip and guard, you might be on to something." Then I realized that I might need to anneal the grippy-stock-handle-thingy portion of the blade and amend its curve . . . and then shame overtook me, and I hid my face from the wroth of the righteous katana (or even katana-style) fans.
Hmmmm, now . . . . and he runs off, chuckling madly to himself in a way that, should the authorities hear of it, would almost certainly lead to (justified, mind you!) preventive detention.

I wonder why more people don't try this.
Or maybe try it the other way around.

Yep, thought of doing that ages ago. But my only katanas are my global gear ones. They are so cheap I wouldn't worry about butchering one like that, but then I question the bother over makeing the parts and using them on such a cheap blade. BW and I have talked about it too. I'd probably go a Cutlass style, or Falchion 'S' hilt though.

I saw that 'Scottish katana before on SFI... not my thing, but pretty cool that it was done. I LOVE the look of that modified Tenchi tho... that sweet.

I always thought about a short bladed chinese dao with a basket hilt. I have to confess to a similar thought to you and Brenno- getting one of the cheap daos from Warsword and converting it into a cutlass. I really like the tenchi re-hilt too. I can't put my finger on why, but this basket-hilted-katana just looks wrong to me. Dunno. Maybe if I keep staring at it the answer will come to me... Cheers Marc E

Nice; it looks like a match made...I'm no katana lover by far but I can appreciate the execution. For my part, I'd prefer the straight double edged blade that you see on some examples but I like that you've actually done this...after all, what is improvement but change that has been tried and tried again until the right fitment was found or made?
