Ok I've got 3 friends who are right into Japanese Katana and as a sort of anniversary gift of use knowing it each since grade school I'd like to purchase them all a cheap katana that can be used for general light cutting such as plastic water bottles.
Now of course I want them as cheap as possible since I've got to buy three of them.
Also since I live in Canada shipping is going to kill me as well. Also we don't have a UPS in the closest town (Williams Lake). Last time I ordered something from a city only 9 hours away, it took a month to get to me since UPS refused to deliver to Williams Lake until they had a huge supply of parcels.
So which type of swords should I choose?
So whatever help would greatly be appreciated!

Start with Musashi. They've got super-cheap stuff that'll hold out pretty well. You can pick up three decent Musashis for about $150-200 USD. Local taxes etc. will, of course, add to this. Otherwise, well...expect to shell out at least $500 USD total on the blades alone..

first of all, what's your budget? Their are some very decent musashi's out for $45 each, so those might work for you...

These are only going to be for us to spend some day cutting up plastic bottles and such (we only see each other now once in a blue moon). I've recently been laid off due to my job closing so cash is tight but I'd still like to do this for the guys since it's my year to do something special when they show up. As for Musashi is there any certain ones?

None in particular, really. Their "charcoal black tsuba" series (do they still have those?) were pretty good way back when; I'd go with just about any, really. Heck, if you can spare $80 apiece they have a new line of differentially-hardened swords that seem to be doing very, very well. Of course, buying three of those now might put you past where you want to go... Just have a look around at some of their stuff on various dealers ( www.musashiswords.com is probably the easiest place to look for a good idea of what's offered) and see what you can afford to do.

yeah I've been on that site quite abit and sadly allot of the swords are sold out, but I'll keep checking! I've also got to remember that their prices are in USD, so a $50 sword at Musashiswords.com is going to cost me $63, and a $100 sword will set me back $126.... are those $80 dh musashis in stock anywhere? Nowhere I can find! I've been looking!

Ok I found a place that has the Musashi Takeo Katana, (http://www.musashiswords.com/shop/product.php?productid=99&cat=0&page=1), in stock although for $10 more and I would have to deal with UPS shipping.
Swords of might have them in stock for $100 USD plus shipping, would come out to about $170 CDN each shipped (not counting taxes).
I remember the good old days when I picked up a brand new Paul Chen Practical Katana for $175 CDN shipped to my door. sadly it was stolen along with most of my stuff when someone broke into my place couple years ago (wasn't insured).

What are people's opinions on: ~Masahiro ~Ryumon ~Damascus Blades Masahiro: Mostly not too interesting... very hit and miss on quality, in that pricerange... I'd stick with Musashi. Ryumon: No direct experince... but very similar to Masahiro in theory. Both are re-brands not true forges so it's hard to say... tho I have seen more Ryumon that interest me then Masahiro. *NOT* in the pricerange your looking at for your triad of katana tho. Damascus Blades: I would not want these on a katana, but thats just my taste. I *WOULD* however stay away from ANY damascus blades in the lower end of the spectrum... anything under 500 or so. Lower priced Damascus offerings tend be be poorly done.

So sounds like Musashi is the winner and now I just have to find a place to get them from that will ship USPS!

I'm sure he can get you some Musashi's that fit the bill via USPS.
