I would like to thank all the members of SBG for their sharing of information and and understanding a beginner.
I was also looking on the "other" forum, and it seems if someone said "I have a budget of $500", they would get a reply of "save another $500, because there is nothing worthwhile under $1000".
They also seem to think if you are not into martial arts, don't even buy one. I used to shoot trap at a local gun club, and all the real good shooters would have customized over and under shotguns. But the beginners were not looked down upon for starting out with a basic pump action production shotgun. Nobody cared what kind of gun you had.
It seems like the people here are really into sharing, and the other forum doesn't want to know you unless you have a few grand to throw around for a sword. Again, thank you for not being "Sword Snobs".

Hey Steve... you'll find that among most of us, we like nothing more then to share info and help one another out. We are all drawn here by a love of swords... and we all work together to acomplish what no one of us alone could. While it's true that you get what you pay for... and the more you have to spend, the better your options get... there are stlll plenty of god options under 500... and under 300... and thats why we are here. Edit: I just saw you joined awhile back, now I feel like a dolt talking to you like you were new here. You must be quite the lurker, I saw your post count and just assumed you were new. ;D I lurked for almost a year before making an account... heh.

I so agree with you Steve, and you know what's even better here, if you want some insights about buying your first 1000 and up sword you can also get it here ! Knowledge and elitism makes knowledge only open for a few...

I will agree with steve88, this is the only forum I'm a part of and in my short time here it has been hugely helpful to me. I'm even learning all the terms for the different parts of a Katana ;D. Who knew there were so many names attached to a sword?
I can't see myself buying a sword for over $1,000 for another 16 years, when the last of my 5 kids get kick out ;D

I hear you. Not everybody has a disposable income that can blow thousands of dollars on katana...I know I can't. I am rather happy with my small collection of production katana, particularly my new custom no-hi Ronin sword and my 2 DH Musashi Black Bamboos. Welcome to the site and have a little karma Steve.;D

i'll add to the thanks! it's great to find a group that's this open not only to helping beginners, but to actual discussions that don't automatically devolve into arguments! (nice change from a few gun forums i've browsed through...)
The info available on this forum is priceless!

Again, thank you for not being "Sword Snobs". I hear you. The sure way to kill interest in a sport or hobby is to tell someone they can't do it based on income or ability. What they *should* be telling you is how to start low-budget, and where to start training (if you're interested in training). I like SBG because it *specializes* in sub-$300 weaponry, and getting the best bang for your limited buck. --Edward

Yup thats one of the reasons I love this place. I forget what thread but I mentioned I have the same problem on a auto forum. Say you want a mustang for budget XXXX somone recommends buy a Challenger for XXXXX well if your gonna spend XXX on a challnger save an extra XXXXXXX and buy a vette, if your gonna get a vette save xxx and get a bmw xxxxxxx. In there theoretics they have people wanting to spend 24k on a car spending 60-70k on a car they probably cant even afford insurance on........

Not to mention that saving an extra xx amount of dollars may mean another xxx amount of years. My advice is never about dollars but interest, see if a blade holds your interest for a while and then decide whether to buy it. I recently bought a gladius I wanted for a couple months, got it and the sword is s**t, moral of the story you never know unless you handle the blade and go for what you like and what has a good reputation, even then this sword buying game is somewhat of a gamble.

At least, not on a sword. I've been easing the Albion Knight into my wife's mind- and while she is amenable to the IDEA it is the execution that leaves a bit to be desired. Our bank acct, namely. lol Edited to add: I never did say thank you, did I, SBG? THANK YOU!!!

Here, Here ....... I might own 2 Albions in my life, and I'm not majorly prepared to go custom (but hey give it 10 years things might change) ......... fact is if I spend 1000 on a sword its gonna be an insanely expensive wallhanger cause I wont want much in the way of water to touch it (and I loves my bottle cutting). A 300 dollar sword, I cant slice and slice and even if one day it finally breaks hey no biggy. Own your possessions, dont let them own you (my etho's in life which allows me to never have credit card debt)

Though this is my very first post on SBG, I've been reading and following posts for a good while and I also would like to throw in a big "Thanks" to all of the members here for the overall courtesy and knowledge sharing that is found in this forum! I have around 12 katanas and around 6 medieval and fantasy style swords right now and I've, thus far, not spent more than $200 on a sword, however I am about to purchase the Cheness Tenchi from SBG for $249. I swear I've learned more about swords in general from simply hanging out here at the forum... than anything else! Anyway, Thank You from me as well.
