This in my opinion is one of, if not the most, beautiful swords I've ever seen in my life: The personal kilic of Suleiman the Magnificent, 16th century. I've realised such a beauty will never be made by one of the big companies, and not even to my own preferences, so custom is the only way to go! I want it slightly different though, as I want something like a Seljuk Turk or Mameluk might have carried during the Crusades, not an Ottoman blade. So possibly slightly shorter, no golden filigree, and a different hilt, more like this one from Lutel: (the one on the far right with the dragon heads) However, I was thinking, unless I can find evidence of pistol grip in use in Seljuk times, of making the hilt more like this, but keeping the dragon headed quillons: (hilt on the bottom) And I'm thinking of having the handle in horn. I don't know if Seljuk's would of had Damascus steel, so I'm thinking of foregoing that. This sword I think , would be absolutely marvelous. Now you guys know more smiths by name then I do, so who would you recommend? Also, not to sound n00bish, but is there any way to keep this sword under $1,000 dollars? I'm thinking this weapon would be no more ornate then the SBG 300$ katana. Brenno.. I'm looking at you, your falchion was absolutely fantastic, think you could possibly do this? Thanks in advance!

Hm... I have not seen either produce a blade quite like that... but for custom quality in the pricerange your looking at... I'd check with both Brendan (FableBlades) and Matt (BKS)... they both do awesome custom work and in the price range your looking at. Show them the pics, tell em what your looking for... and they would be able to tell you pretty quickly if it's something they could do, and if they could do it at your cost.

You could also try Jim over at www.atar.com. Of all the nations that we could expect to have true damascus or wootz it would be the nations involved in the crusade we know that Salah al-Din had a sword made of true damascus steel, not the pattern welded stuff. That sword pattern is beautiful but I prefer the lion tailed design of the shamshir for a hilt personally.

That is a very interesting sword to say the least. It must have a balance point of at least 12 inches down the hilt.

Hi Thanks for remembering me. I probably cant help for this one as it involves pattern welded steel (which we could buy in however) and lost wax casting for the guard (which I'd need brotherbanzai to do). However BKS can do all that stuff. If you don't have any joy maybe get back to me and we can investigate buying pattern welded stock and having the dragon guard done by BB. It will cost well over the grand though. Last time I enquired about patternwelded steel they wanted $10 per centimetre. Cheers Brendan

hey, Bren! I believe he mentioned that pattarn welded wasn't important, just FYI, so I'm sure you could do that, with BB's help on the guard. However, I don't know if you'd be open to doing a bone hilt, like he wants... -Slayer

Slayer, he said horn, not bone. Very different substances. Tsafa, I'd be willing to bet the PoB on that kilij is between 5 and 7 inches. And just a heads-up. Something somewhat similar to what you describe, from a blade perspective, might be showing up on the semi-custom market in a month or two. Maybe...

Although, it sort of makes no difference for the way I meant it, as I believe that Bren prefers not to work with animal-sourced materials, with the obvious exception of leather. However, I could be very wrong and have misunderstood him... ( ) -Slayer

Yeah, in your pricerange, I'd see what Bren or BKS could do, but I suspect it will cost over 1000, as Bren said.

BKS would do this, INCLUDING the dragon heads forged instead of cast (Not that either is better the looks just comes out different), maybe even for under or at $1000. I would say email Matty, worst they can say is no or they would need more money for it, in which case they could probably work something out for that price you would be happy with.

I'll try to get some at the shop tonight. It's not mounted into anything yet. In fact, I'm not sure it's even been heat-treated yet. I'll find out.
