A little background: I purchased a Angus Trim DS 1503b single hand sword from Lee Reeves ( www.leesarmoury.com) several months ago. While it performed like a typical ATrim, I also felt it looked rather plain. Pics of the original can be found here . I considered several hilt designs but I ultimately decided on Darkwood Armory Arms and Post hilt. The Del Tin 5153, which has a similar hilt, is a sword I'd considered buying in the past. This project allowed me to get a nice mix of ATrim performance and Del Tin style. I added a octagonal pommel for a little extra flair. Handle is maple and I really like the light color. Unfortunately, my hands are all ready getting the wood dirty. After a few emails to get the details sorted, I sent in the blade to Scott at DA to have the hilt and pommel fitted. Turnaround time was 2.5 weeks. The guys at DA also polished the blade and ground the ricasso free of charge. Overall finish is good with a couple of minor flaws. Namely, there are some grind marks on the knuckle bow and quillons and the grinding on the posts is little dirty. However, I am quite satisfied with the overall appearance. This is my 3rd DA purchase and I've enjoted doing business with them. Indeed, I'm already thinking about my next project...

I really like the way this looks. How does the sword balance with the rings so forward the guard?

I'll echo the enthusiasm. Say, about that maple. Is it "in the raw"? If it is, you might consider a few hand-rubbed coats of tung oil. It might darken it slightly, but probably not as much as sweat/blood/dirt would darken it. I've rehabbed a few other wooden . . . umm, "grippystockhandlethingies" with hand-rubbed oil finishes, and been pleased with the results.

I really like the way this looks. How does the sword balance with the rings so forward the guard? POB is about 4.25 inches from the guard. There is a noticeable "weightiness" around the hilt. I think a slightly longer blade (say 34" vs the current 31") would be improve the balance, but it is definitely a handy sword. Unfortunately, I havent weighed the sword yet. Overall handling is fast and responsive. Tip control is also good. Wrapping the finger around the ricasso improves the handling even more. I can see the appeal of the cut and thrust style when handling this baby.

Thanks for the suggestion, I may try the oil.

Scott @ Darkwood does such grand work. I used to own a side-sword he made for me with a Del-Tin back-sword blade...it was brilliant. With much regret, I had to sell it to pay hospital bills....man I still miss that sword... www.myarmoury.com/review_dw_ss.htmla review I did for it on myArmoury. That's a great looking piece you have there...love the cut-outs in the hilt. cheers, Bill

I've got a DT backsword but I'm thinking of using it for a baskethilt or schiavona.

That is an excellent reinvention of an otherwise good sword.
