I seem to remember good things being said about the Windlass Verneuil, and note in passing that these swords are on the "last chance" page at MRL. www.museumreplicas.com/p-311-verneuil.aspxI figure if it was a good deal at 285, even better at 171, right? EDIT TO ADD: I'm not personally interested in this sword, but figured someone else might like the lowered price.

My finger would do that immediately if I was in US.

Are most of MRL's swords made by Windlass? They do seem to look the same.

I have one as well and I must say that it is a GREAT sword. Marc, you'd love it. Seriously, there's no choice, IMO. GET IT!!! Great cutter, great handling, great looks... I've whacked my cutting stand at least a dozen time with no damage whatsoever (to the sword! The table, on the other hand... ). The only problem IMO, is the threaded pommel, but that's fixed with a bit of loctite. I hope this helps! -Slayer

I guess I'll just wait on it...

Jason at AoV has had the Fantasy Viking on sale for 164 for quite some time. Quite a steal since it actually handles and cuts very well. Even though it is a few ounces over 3lbs, it handles nicely because the weight is in the crossguard, keeping it fairly close to the hand. It is very forgiving in the cut, making great cuts even with my rank amateur form. And it's flexible without being whippy like the other Type X's Windlass has out, being relatively stiff using Mike's whippy test. It's no dedicated thruster but it performs the task nicely on light targets.
Plus it looks awesome and it makes for a great bottle opener in a pinch. ;D
Edit: Jason also has a price match guarantee. So if you show him the Windlass page, I'm sure he'd let you have the sword for 150 as well. Not to mention I'd much rather give him my business.
Second edit: Anyone handled one of those Baron's Swords? at a bit over 36" in blade length, I'd think it would be a bit whippy, since it doesnt have a fuller and I'm sure there isnt much distal taper, if any at all. But it could be a hidden little gem....

Unless I here specificly from someone, I just don't look at any blade from Windlass longer then 31-32 inches. I prefer to keep em under that even... because of the whippy problem. I agree about Jason... if I wanted the Fantasy Viking, I would go with him and Arms of Valor, because he is good people who stands behind his stuff.

About the baron: Kid, try it and share your impressions with us! A possible little sacrifice or a pleasant surprise, but all for the greater good of the community! Lol! I was also interested in that sword...nice grip and fittings...esthetically pleasing imo (would have been better with a fuller, thought). It has been discussed in a previous thread and some thought it's lack of profile taper would make it blade heavy, poorly balanced...As to the whippyness factor, the Verneuil -as example of Windlass new offerings- wasn't tagged as whippy IIRC...maybe this one won't be either even if differently shaped blades...
Towton, Verneuil, German bastard : look like sure bets to me...
(edit: oops, wrong german bastard...not the one I thought that is on sale)
Anywoo, just my two cents...
Cheers,
Reflingar

Just wanted to add: I talked with a MRL representative earlier today and they still have one Towton left: if I was in the US, I'd go for it at 140$! Old model but one of the good ones, see the review at MyArmoury...
As it is, with the current currency exchange rate and MRL relatively expensive delivery to Canada, it's not worth it enough...oh, well...there will be other good deals I suppose (a bit disappointed here as I wanted it a few years back, hesitated only a few days and they discontinued it meanwhile: nostalgia of past desires...).
Congrats on the lucky b...... that gets it! It's supposed to be a nice little sword...

It is, I quite liked mine, though it was a bit too whippy for my personal tastes...
Darn shame on the Verneuil - looks like I'll have to make the discontinued area for the Windlass reviews on the main site a bit bigger again (sigh).

Yeah... what the hell is it with Windlass... I'm bummed about missing out on the German Bastered Sword Marc and Odingaard said so many nice things about. One minitue it was there on the last chance sale.... the next.... POOF! I went to buy it and gone... presumably forever.

They should still ahve them over at AoV or KoA... I mean, places that stock their products should still have a few left over, right?
