hey guys, yep me again. Was looking at UC and I have to say some of their new offerings look very promising. Gone is the slab handled katana of the past instead they are offering beautiful looking katanas for under $500 USD. I especially like the look of this particular offering; www.unitedcutlery.com/ProductDetail.aspx?itemno=UC2579&cat=UC

Thanks for the heads up
I am surprise that it take United Cutlery so long to step into carbon steel katana , after all they have been cranking stainless steel katana for years so they be the first one to know about market direction . I like the double edge one with straight blade profile

Hmm, I like these offerings. Too bad people will say bad things about them before anyone owns them.

i don't want to fall into the group of the previous statement... but um... why does it have two koiguchi? i also don't like that they refer to the hi as a "blood" groove though i kinda let that slide with a company like this

Now it's just a matter of an SBG member to buy it and give a hands-on review. Any volunteers? --Edward P.S. Give me a few months, and I might be able to step up and get one . . . just not right now .

Well, I won't say bad things about em, cuz I have not handled one nor heard from someone I trust who has. I WILL say I remain VERY skeptical of them being anything worth having untill one of the above conditions are met.

I think they look damn good and at that price are well worth investigating.
Lots of people call it a blood groove that doesn't mean the swords are crap just because they don't use the right terminology. I mean look at all the people calling pattern welded steel damascus, doesn't make the sword any worse.

"The hardwood handle offers black sting ray and black leather wrap that accents the custom designed brass plated guard and menuki. The hardwood sheath is adorned with distinctive artwork and nylon cord wrap and custom knotted rope. "
Bleck, brass "plated"? I can't see any seppa on there, or in the description.
I'm guessing they're using zinc alloy and plate it with gold crap, like most "functional" piles of poo. I don't know, I'll never really trust them.

those are simple observations some of us have learned to look for as warning signs though, like stated above the term blood groove is usually a sign that the company might not know what they are actually doing... and i'm still very confused by the extra kurikata...

If Ken didn't say it I was just about to. He is just stating the obvious in my mind about some strange things that they are saying about the furnishings. Also there is no mention of heat treat on this blade or if it is even heat treated at all. From the description it reads like it's a display only model and not functional whatsoever. It just begs for more information on this sword. I do admit, it looks a LOT better than what UC normally puts out for a Katana. Oh, and about the terminology in the description. That's typical United Cutleries, I expected them to use terms like that so I was braced for it. Thank to Bloodwraith for letting us know that UC is finally attempting to almost, sort of put out a Kat that just about looks the part now.

Agreed fully. My skills at interpreting the little clues one get from looking at a sword tell me that I would NEVER buy one ...not even with favorable reviews backing them up.... I look at the price, and then the product, and just know its not what I would spend money on... maybe For $100, ...or less.... I don't think its "Too bad people will say bad things about them before anyone owns them" I think that there are things that just glare out of the photos, as non-detailed as they are. They don't look damn good to me ... to me they look damn bad... but thats just me , maybe.... After owning dozens of production kats, I guess my requirements for a kat have been boiled down to a core set of attributes... I also think that my skills of judging them from a look have been honed tremendously too... but looking at pics is never 100 % I do admit. I also make it a rule never to buy a sword unless provided several detailed pictures... I don't like photos that seem to hide more than they show....

I personaly would like to see a review of this one. A quick guess tells that the fittings are quite probably on the cheap side but the blade might be ok. If UC is starting to go on the real sword side that might be a first step, lets see what they have in stock for their first try.

Damn good was of course relatively speaking, compared to the slab handled crap they've release in the past these look like a big step up. Although as someone once said you can gold plate semprini but it is at the end of the day still semprini and who wants a gold plated semprini anyway?

I recall a similar quote "You can put sparkles on crap all you want but at the end of the day it's still crap." Thanks to Ken for making master's prophecy come true. I specifically said "guessing" in my post ;D

I recall a similar quote "You can put sparkles on crap all you want but at the end of the day it's still crap." While I am a big fan of the practicalities of Kris' blades, I believe the phrase you want ken is: You can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter. It has various applications in the building trade too.

Once upon a time, UC offered some decent carbon steel blades; years ago before price changes and the shift to SS. Of course, in recent times there hasn't been much offered for real tools from them.
I would hope some of these suppliers that have been around a long time will eventually start carrying some serviceable blades again... before they fade into shopping mall curio shop status completely.
Would you like fries with that Katana Boy Special, sir? ;D
