G'day Y'all, Our friend Ecovolo/Edward started a thread in the Cafe recently for people to list their favorite sword movies, and there have been heaps of other threads discussing all sorts of sword-related media and fiction. It occurs to me that it might be useful to have a place here on SBG for people to review these things more formally, maybe a bit like we do swords and other weapons, as a resource for everyone. Below are the thoughts I've had so far... I'm not sure if it would be better as a new section, or as a sticky thread somewhere- maybe different threads for different types of media- films, graphic fiction (comics and manga ), television, novels, games.. What have I missed? Don't know where it should go... Reviews? General? Off Topic? Since these are reviews, I'd imagine there would be some sort of more-or-less standard format, perhaps with points awarded for different aspects. Maybe we could address the overall qualities of the work, eg. plot, characterization, playability (for games), whatever, and also the more specifically sword-related parts- awesomeness of the weapons, quality of the swordplay, historical accuracy if applicable. So wadjya all think? Idea or dud? I'm keen to hear opinions. I'm just putting the idea forward, I hasten to add! It's up to Paul and the Moderators to make any decisions of course Cheers Marc E -Oh, I put this here in 'General' because it is sorta sword-related. If all you Mods think its better in the cafe, then please move it.

Wow, zero response! Zip. Nothing. Nada. The sound of wind whistling through empty streets. A cricket chirps. A bad idea quietly burns away to ash. Ego collapses. The top of my head caves in and my eyeballs pop out on springs, bouncing slowly.... Cheers Marc E

Hmm depends on what you mean by sword related fiction, would you include the wheel of time as one of those? If so, I'm in.

I have a room that is a dedicated library and it is full of shelves and books and a lot of those books are SF and Fantasy and a lot of those are sword related...................I'm in too!

Same here. I'm a BIG-time reader, and by that I don't mean that I'm fat. I generally read at least 2-3 books a week, almost always fantasy; though many lack swords. Again, I say: COUNT ME IN!!! -Slayer

It doesn't sound like a bad idea...
People already kind of do this, just on a smaller level. As far as rewarding review points goes, i don't like the idea. It really serves no purpose.

Yeah, review points would be weird. But the idea of a review section... I like it! ;D

Oh, ok, some interest then! Dunno if its enough for this to be worth doing, but lets play with the idea some more and see where it goes... On reflection, I think I agree with Slayer and James that awarding point would be, sorry, pointless. So lets scrap that idea. On what would be considered sword-related, well what do you-all think? I hardly read any fantasy, so my opinion isn't worth much there. I'm more a historical-fiction-kinda-dude. With printed fiction (novels, short stories, etc) I think I'd consider it 'sword-related' if swords and sword-use played a prominent role, and were described in some detail. What do the rest of you think? Maybe the same criterion would be used to decide the 'sword-relatedness' of other media as well- Don't forget that I'm imagining this to include films, games and graphic fiction. So, 'sword-related' would mean the work prominently features swords and sword-use, and in some detail. What do y'all think about format? My initial thought was to structure these like the reviews for swords. But that's probably needlessly formal, especially if we're not awarding points, and also given that we'll be dealing with different kinds of media. I guess my idea was to have something more elaborate than "Hey has anyone else seen Blah? S'cool!" - not that there's anything wrong with that, but its not a review Thinking about it more, I don't know that its worth setting any kind of format for reviews to follow. I think reviewers will find their own way to discuss their topics. Lastly, how should it be arranged, and where should it go? My preference would be for it to have it's own heading, either under 'Off Topic' or 'General', with subheadings for Film, Games, Print and Graphic. That be the easiest arrangement for people to read, search through and find what they want. Of course, it's a lot more work to set it up that way, I imagine, so it'd probably only be worthwhile if there was sufficient interest. What do y'all think? All input welcome! Thanks! Marc E

Sounds like a good Idea. I would put it in the Sword Fantasy area of the forum. If a lot of people are interested, I would say to create a sub-forum in there.

Perhaps calling the new heading "Sword-Related Fiction", with a description showing that it is the heading for hand-to-hand or primitive-weapon-related media: games, books, movies, etc.. As for a rating system, leave that to the individual to describe (ie. four out of five stars, buy it immediately, waste of time and money, etc.).
As for where to put it? I suggest a heading under "Sword Reviews" or perhaps under the Cafe heading.
Just my two cents.

Count me in; I love sword-related fiction and have read a number of books that deal with them in some way, shape or form. My current favorites are the Kushiel series (6 books all told); I know I've read each one at least twice - the descriptions of the duels are such that you can almost SEE it. I love stuff like that!

How about Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series ? A good read so far . Indeed! The only part in this series where I winced a bit is when (in the first book) the smith making Uhtred's sword calls the fuller a 'blood groove' . A bloody good read though.

Thanks to everyone who's expressed interest in this idea! At the moment, though, I don't know that there's enough to warrant a separate sub-forum or stickied thread, so I'd suggest that if any of you would like to do a review of any sort of sword-related fiction you start up a thread and go for it. We'll see how it develops from there. I'm not sure whether this is the appropriate forum for these reviews, or if it would be better in the Cafe To my mind, this is the right spot, since the Cafe is for things not necessarily sword-related, and we're talking about stuff that is sword-related. However discussions about movies seem to mostly happen in the cafe. Dunno Any guidance from the mods or more experienced forumites? Again, thanks to you all Cheers Marc E
