Hey guys, I designed this one a while ago and have considered getting it commissioned several times. I have the money to do it but I am trying to work out if I need to change anything on it or if I can make it better? Any advice appreciated; Brendan reckons a round pommel might work better I am still trying to work that out. Also trying to work out if it should be a short sword or a bastard type sabre. It is a rather odd and unique design and I keep thinking there is something I am missing.

for practical reasons you might want to consider altering the short quillion a bit so that you don't have that point potentially digging into your hand. Maybe extend it outward just a touch and use similar curvature like that on the left quillion?

Maybe extend it outward just a touch and use similar curvature like that on the left quillion? Agreed. As it is, looks like it could be painfull. I would LOVE that design as a short sword... maybe 24-26 inch blade. Then again, I LOVE shorter swords, so I'm biased. It's sexy.

If you remember, I believe our friend Bloodwraith here is also a short sword enthusiast... Sounds like a plan! Just fix the painful quillion, an you're set. -Slayer

haha. I already discussed reducing that backward quillion, so well spotted mandorallin. This is the amended drawing I came back with, including the round pommel. Though I think I prefer BWs pommel now:

I think the handle should keep in line with the curve of the blade.

A slight curve to the handle would be a great idea Sam. The sword will be a shortsword about 25 inches is the perfect length in my opinion.
Bren: I like my original pommel as well, although it would probably need to be a bit more beefy as it looks a little small in the picture.
Any other input will be considered.

or do you think the handle is better this way around?

I like it curved along with the blade, but my tastes are usually quite eccentric. Maybe not so in this case, but I dunno... ... Although it does not look bad the other way too... Gah! I can't decide.

Both of them look awesome, but I'm thinking that they might not handle so well. The first design looks uncomfortable, but the second, while appearing to be quite manageable, seems like your hand would be too close to the guard... Do you see what I'm saying? Sorry if I'm not explaining this very well, lol. I hope this helps! -Slayer

The handle is designed after an axe handle which is extremely comfortable to use.

I like the straight handle better. It just dosen't look right with the curved one to me. Dosen't look like it would handle well.

I like the design where the handle recurves forward... as long as you make sure there is enough space between the knucklebow guard and the grip for your hand, I think I would go with that one. Looks wicked.

How about a single curve in the grip which flows away from the curve of the blade so the whole thing flows together. Then put some more space between the guard and the grip. Then tighten up the cross and have it smoothly transition into the grip. Add a little bulk to the pommel and have it compliment the guard. To roughly illustrate:
