hello
I am waiting till payday next week to order a shura w/out bohi - a lot of cheness's through hardened blades have a visible temper line like a subtle hamon -
This is apparently caused by the thinner yakiba edge cooling quicker than the thicker mune - resulting in a nice subtle looking sughua hamon type temper line .
what I was wondering is , has anybody tried to enhance this feature with either grit papers and a hybrid polish or even used the uchigumori stones like hazuya to whiten it and bring it out more -
this would be the best of both worlds - a tough as hell through hardened blade with the aesthetics of a differentialy tempered hamon .
I am sorry if this is an often asked question or if its in the wrong forum - I am brand new to cheness swords so please bear with me .
Thankyou
CC

It is very easy to enhance it using the hybrid polishing technique that is mentioned on the site, and I believe I linked you to it already in another post of yours.....
anyway, only differentially tempered blades will have true hamon that you can polish out.....
hope this helps,
-W.H.

Sure thing mate, www.sword-buyers-guide.com/support-files/sword-care.pdfunder polishing and scratch removing, im 99% certain this is the technique to enhance the hamon, aswell as removing scratches and polish the blade to have mirror finish [or satin].... someone correct me if i am mistaken please! -W.H.

The temper line that you see on the shura is actually etched, the kaze is the only 9260 steel blade with true hamon due to differential tempering but the shura has a much stronger edge due to being through hardened, hope that helps

he's correct [ I just looked] there is no true hamon on the shura...... I did not remember that..
You cannot enhance its hamon... :S

Hey guys, was on the cheness website and found this -
''NOTE: Some of those who polish their own blades are discovering an underlying temper line beneath some etched hamon on certain blades, including our monosteel lines. This is not a true natural hamon from clayed hardening. The differentiation that is seen is actually the result of a gradation resulting from the heating and quenching of the blade and its geometry. (thinner ha side of the blade is heated faster to a higher temperature than the mune side... additionally, the blade is usually quenched with the edge side first... Again, the thinner ha side is cooled more rapidly than the thicker mune.... resulting in a differential cooling rate.) Thus, even though there may be evidence of a hamon in through hardened blades (provided it is polished just right), this is not a true natural hamon as it is intended.''
hope this helps

It is not really through hardened, if it shows ANY form of temper line.

You didn't do anything wrong at all. "Threadomancy" is the secret dark art of bringing back to life threads that have been dead (no new posts) for awhile, in this case, no one had posted in this thread for almost 2 years.. so, that just shows what great skill you have in threadomancy! +1 to your karma, sir. Welcome to SBG.

WHOA! 23 month-threadromancy! I think we have a record, guys... lol -Slayer Sorry guys, did i do somthing wrong - im still new! Oh, no. You're cool, mate! Generally, threads this old are just kinda left complacent, unless there's a good reason to revive them, but it isn't BAD. Good for a nice laugh, maybe, but no one's pointing fingers at you. Welcome to SBG, btw! I'm sure you'll enjoy the great sword-addicts around here; these guys know a lot! (No, I'm not one of 'these guys' I'm still kinda new too, lol ) -Slayer
