I thought I would post this up as a cautionary tail about sword safety. I thought people could post up there images in here and tell the tail about how they got hurt using a sword and perhaps it may prevent stupid accidents. My tail start with me fixing the geometry and sharpening my SOM build your own katana that I reviewed, and now have mounted with a new tsuba and seppa. As I was finishing getting the the file marks removed with 220 grit sand paper, the sword slipped off my lap and cut my little finger on my left hand at the knuckle. The sword was on my lap because I prefer it that way for one and I dont have a proper work bench with vise. I could have prevented this by wearing a simple pair of leather gloves which I own, but neglected to wear.

Good idea for a thread. I'm glad to see that injury didn't turn out worse. Hopefully this can become a "lessons learned" thread. Wear gloves, folks!!

There was a guy on SFI who put his iaito clean through his arm whilst attempting blind noto.

Ah, I remember that, too. That was nasty.

Vtolds
You are lucky it didn't do worse! I remember this time I was outside carving some wood (I was only a kid) and I peeled my thumb finger print almost clean off! It didn't really hurt, but it stung really bad after I run it through some water!
Moral of the story (And the thread)? Be careful and practice safety precautions. And try to wear gloves when handling a sharp blade.

Yowch. Anyone have a link to the thing on SFI? Ok ... Normally I wouldn't post these ... but I'm going to put up Don's photos of his wounds... I am the training moderator, so maybe i have a responsibilty to show this... maybe it'll help some of the wingnutz that think they can self train by imitating what they see ... it happened on noto... he just pushed the Shinken through his arm ... not a powered cut... Now I'm not saying don't cut without training...cause we all know ya'll are going to...all I 'm saying is don't think you are self trained and try al kinds of techniques... just cut..carefully... If you want to practice noto or kata , for gods sake get training... these sword things are dangerous I'm not going to hot link... just clickable links... Warning :NOT for the squemish... The entry wound... img10.imageshack.us/my.php?image=attachment206b683etm2.jpgand where it came out the other side of the arm... img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=attachmentrm1.jpg

Marc: I thought he said in his wounded thread that he wasn't trained?

OWCH!!! No, I'm not morbid, but I am a very curious type. ;D Before it was mentioned, I had no desire WHATSOEVER to see a picture of a guy with a sword through his arm. But once you said it... well, like I said: I'm a curious type! lol -Slayer

I firmly believe that part of being a responsible sword owner is understanding the real life damage these things can do. So, it's our duty to have a morbid curiosity about sword wounds!..... Right? *crickets chirp*

Just like driving a car, it actually helps to see the results of accidents and mistakes, re-enforces good driving practices.

First of all, holy crap!! That is the WORST wound I have ever seen. Just to get my story right; this guy was resheathing (noto?) his katana and missed? I thought they had to use iaito, as in blunt?! I had no idea that they could do that kind of damage...
to the OP, you need to sharpen it more... ;P

Impressive injury. I've seen worse, but not more than once or twice and not done accidentally...
