Hello! I have some money coming in a few weeks, and I need to know which sword I should buy first.. I have narrowed my choices to the Hanwei Practical XL Light Katana and the Valiant Armoury Atrim practical longsword. Even though it looks like a matter of taste, I can't decide. What do you think I should buy first? I don't care too much about historical accuracy, but decent handling and structural integrity are a must. Please help. I like trying to cut empty bottles too, but that does notearn too many points in this decision to me.

I've heard good things about the Hanwei Practicals. If it's just a choice between the two, I say start there.

Hmm... a choice between a PK XL Light and a VA Atrim Longsword. Personally I'd go for the katana but then I'm a katana guy so my decision is biased. If its structural integrity you're looking for though I'd forgo the XL Light geometry. Thinner blade profile and almost no niky (if at all) makes for an edge that is likelier to take damage. Just going with a PK (or I guess its the PK Special) now would be a good idea. I have always loved the Practical Plus Katana from Hanwei... and would suggest that actually. Btw, what do you intend to do with these swords?
Oh about the longsword. Yeah I've got no clue about them so hopefully you get some good info from other members of this forum that are more informed about european arms than I am.

I would go with the VA Atrim. But I personally just prefer European style blades. Plus, it got great reviews.

Katana are stronger and can cut through several inches of solid steel with a single swing! lol Sorry had to be said. Yeah seriously though I usually advise for the katana just because I prefer them too. Anyway I'm sure the VA Atrim is a nice sword - I just know nothing about it so I can't suggest it to anyone. lol

My vote goes to the VA A-Trim. It would take to abuse better than the katana would.

I vote VA Atrim sword as well. There are a million and one katana out there these days... but the newest offerings from Valiant Armoury are nothing short of awesome... and it's VERY exciting the direction Sonny is taking the company in. I want to see more of it, so they should get more support... in the form of customer dollers.

The way I see it, the two are completely different, thus a direct comparison of the two is out of the question...as such I can't really give a pro/con layout of them, either... I'll have to look into the price difference, as were it me that would be the main deciding factor, getting the cheaper one first so it'd be easier to afford the other one next. Since buying both is pretty well a must, anyway. Ultmately the choice is your own, though. I already own a PK and have for several years so if I had to pick for me I'd get the VA. That said, I do like where VA is going with their new lineup. Granted, rather than a Practical model, I'd save for a Signature. Oh, and as to Master's abuse comment...no, it wouldn't, really...and for goodness' sake people, stop abusing your swords.

It's mine I'll do what I want with it.
I'd go with the VA Practical. I've got the Arming Sword right next to me. ;D

It's mine I'll do what I want with it. That's all well and good and I won't stop you but let's not endorse the idea, eh? I kinda figured part of the purpose of this place was educating people on proper sword use, not encouraging abuse.

Thanks a lot for the advice, guys! I've decided to buy The VA practical Longsword. I agree that Saving up for a signature series is a good idea, but i would have to save up for another year and I just can't wait that Long. Again, Thanks For the advice!!! The thing that persuaded me most was Marc recommending The VA. If anyone says otherwise, please tell me in within 2 weeks. I will be using the sword for cutting water filled plastic bottles, half mats, full mats, and double mats. I decided not to get the XL first because I wouldn't want to damage it with crappy technique on a double mat. I'll practice cutting with another Katana before buying the XL Light.

Though if kid is in the same vein... Well...whatever floats his boat. recessmonkey, only you will know if you made a good choice, and you won't know that until you get it, anyway.

Yeah I was following Shadow's joke. Shoulda put a wink emote... As I've said in other threads, I definitely do not endorse abuse (except in reviews where the user feels comfortable pushing the sword to its limits). And of course, exceptions can be made in case of zombies.

Agreed. Zombies are a great reason for most things... Also, reenactment is a good reason... As that is what the sword is made for. ;D But a blunt is not really a sword though, as it has none of the functions of one... Looks like we got a new thread to ponder! Okay, okay I am just kidding.

VA Atrim, no contest. Too many Katana around here already. ;D
Only kidding about the Kats, sorta.
