I am planning my next euro-single-hander-buy. I have been happy with my first european single-hander, the Windlass/MRL sword of Tristan, but I felt like something was amiss (I talked about it in another thread).
So, now I am looking for a single-hand european sword that will blow my mind away. I am looking for: -a good cutter (ideally, something that won't require much edge-maintenance out of the box, 'cuz a accusharp is about the most complex sharpening tool I can handle for now ...) -preferably early medieval -single-hand -sub 300 $ (or a bit more if the sword is really without a doubt mind-shattering good). -with great handling -with decent historical accuracy ...
I have been eyeing a lot the Valiant Armory Practical arming sword and the Castille (base version), from the same company. I heard a bit about the Tinker arming sword from Hanwei, but I'm not sure if it is worth the money, compared to the V.A. products.
Anyway, enough rambling ...
What do you think ? Am I reasonable in what I am looking for ? Any other swords to suggest ?
Thanks

Shameless plug here, but I've got a VA Practical Arming (Custom Tuned) for sale in the Classifieds. Brand new, never cut with it. Link: /index.cgi?board=selling&action=display&thread=8256
I havent had the chance to own the Castile (Waiting on that Crusader...heh), but from Tom's review, it was heavy and needed a lot of edge work. VA offers an "Extra Sharp" option now for it that fixes that problem, but at the cost of a secondary bevel. Tom says it cuts awesome since the rework, though. If you want to keep it under 300, get the basic version (not the signature). It's the same sword, just not with the fancy scabbard/belt. I'm not sure if the 'extra sharp' version is still a bit heavy.

Hello Mr. Casanova
Thanks for the plug about your arming sword, I will keep it in mind, if I decide to buy the arming sword. I will send you a PM soon, I have a question or two about this sword.
I have read Tom's review of the Castille, and I am considering it because it has a more ''historical'' look than the arming sword. However, that look comes for 70 extra US bucks (which is nearly 90 canadian loonies lol), which explains why I keep the arming sword in mind. I don't mind if the sword is a bit heavy, if it is well-designed and feels good in hand.

Hey sabastian, I don't have the castille (currently looking at the crusader though) but I do have the VA practical. It happens to be one of my favorite swords, (your looking at an Albion Pioters owner here). anyway the sword does need to be 'tuned' last I checked, VA may have fixed the problem, but you can "tune" it yourself without much trouble. So I'd go with, depending on budget and patience level, the Crusader (which looks to be very similar) On a side note the tinker hanwei single hander looks pretty darned awesome, but I'm waiting for reviews on that.

The one Kid is selling is the tuned version... so that ones all good. Also, acording to Sonny of VA, the next batch of VA Practicals have been made at a new forge and should be closer to spec then the first batch... so basicly they are all supposed to be as good as a tuned version... of course, one never knows for SURE about that... so I would take the sure thing and pick up Kid's sword. The Crusader won't be out for awhile... but it looks like it will basicly be a prettier version of the Practical Arming Sword. The Tinker Single Handed swords came in from the forge overwieght, so they were 'sent back'... still waiting for the new batch, not sure how long that will be.

Hi, I have a Castile, it’s a beautiful looking sword and mine is pretty sharp, it certainly cuts well. I bought the signature version and for me it was worth the extra money.
My only real complaint about it is the weight. In my opinion it’s half a pound to heavy. You can feel that extra weight as soon as you pick it up.
