Hello everyone.
I'm looking for buy a new sword in celebration of receiving quite a nice scholarship just today (meaning that I don't have to save my pennys quite so hard and MIGHT get away with buying a new sword >_>) Probably not wise given that I'm about to move away for university and all but hey.
Anyway, I'm looking for a side sword or something similar, ie a decent tip cutter and thruster with a finger guard and good handling, the handling being the quality I'm primarily concerned with.
I had been looking at the hanwei side sword, but upon reading up on it here I'm begining to question its structural integrity, I don't care that the handle is plastic, more so that it seems to be weak plastic. Historical accuracy is at best a bonus as far as I'm concerned and I really only care for its practicality as a backyard cutter.
So, to get to the point, what I'm looking for is some feedback on any side swords you guys may own, or any recomendations for particular swords even if you don't own one.
Thanks very much.

Definitely have a look at Darkwood Armory.....Scott Wilson does some fantastic work. A little bit above the $300 mark but surely worth if you swing it. www.darkwoodarmory.com/store/I used to own a side-sword he made and it was grand (had to sell it to pay some bills). Very nice handling piece. Here is a review I did for it over on myArmoury site. www.myarmoury.com/review_dw_ss.htmlcheers, Bill

Thanks for the reply, I had a look into these swords and though they look like nice swords getting one shipped to Australia (I was unable to find a dealer here) looks to cost near $100 US, which would raise the overall price of the sword out of my range. (would be at least $700 AUD to get the sword and get it here, I'm looking to spend no more than $450 AUD ($300 USD) or so.)
Thinking about it, the only makers I really have easy access to that I can find are Global Gear, Hanwei and Cold Steel. Perhaps I'll have a look into the cold steel scottish style broad sword, though I really want a side sword for the added control offered with the finger guard, I am right in thinking that this grip is impossible with the basket hilt broad swords aren't I?

triddle, I have a Hanwei Side Sword. Love it!
Take it apart, fill the grip with epoxy (JB Weld), and put it back together.
Light, quick, with a POB about half an inch forward of the ricasso. Sharpest sword in my growing collection.
The down side with mine is that the scabbard is very loose. I'll have to shim it some day soon. Also, the scabbard should be weighted at the tip (closed end), as the POB with the sword in scabbard is still very close to the hilt.
If I were a starving college student again and could afford an extravagance, the Side Sword would not be a bad choice.
Of course, YMMV.
