Here is an idea I sent to Eyal today for a possible commission I want to do: This was done in MS Paint, so forgive it's lackluster appearance. It's a fairly cut and dry design, meant to be a hand and a half companion to the Black Knight arming sword. Not based on a specific historical example, but definately within the realm of an Oakeshott Type XVIIIa, as there is nothing about it which could be considered historically inaccurate. I gave the name Black Lotus for three reasons: The first is I am a student of Fiore, so the association with the 'Flower of Battle' was important. Next, the magical properties of the fictional Black Lotus in Conan-lore was always pretty cool to me. Lastly, it will be black, like the Black Knight, and the pommel resembles a a flower. Hence, Black Lotus... ;D Naturally, your input is apperciated!

That is pretty sweet! I would prefer a different type of guard, but that is just me in bad taste.

excellent! The more two-handers/bastard swords the better! Plus, I really like that pommel style, I certainly hope Eyal adds that to their usual line up. Well done (especially for Microsoft paint)

That is a bastard sword. They call it a bastard sword because it is a mix, or a "bastardization" between and single hander and a two hander.

Oops, I misread your post. I read it "It should be a two hander or bastard sword" Or something along those lines. Sorry.

I like it... You don't want it peened tho, right? The Black Knight being one of the few swords they don't peen now, I suspect that has something to do with that pommel.

I actually like swords not to be peened if I am using them for cutting or customization. That way I can take them apart to inspect and service them if needed. On the above design, I'd prefer it to be threaded.
Don't get me wrong, I do like peened swords, but only on historically accurate collectable swords that I don't abuse/modify. ;D

I think it's an exquisite sword .. or will be ! and am agree with Berserker i would prefer other kind of guard someyhing like XVII oakeshott guard , like the ouse river swords guards .. And the name I woud prefer name it like other flower because Lotus sounds more oriental and when I hear lotus in a sword name I think in a deadly shamshir scimitar, or something like that . Anyway it's my humble opinion.. and yes whare are waiting for more two handers !

I see the point about the Lotus is native to India and Asia; but by the 1400-1500s, it was in Europe. The Silk Road was well in use as a primary trade route and Lotus plants, teas, medicine, and ointments were one of those things in demand. Look at it like this: this could be a sword that traveled that dangerous overland route and got a reputation from the rogues and bandits along the way. Nothing like a good back story...
In hindsight, it could be called the Black Orchid, Blackie Lawless, Black and Tan, Black Rose, Black and Mild; the Lotus name is just an idea and what I would call mine. Name it whatever, I'd just like to get the damn thing made - LOL.

If you go with Orchid (Or another) is it OK if I use Locust? It is a damn good name! (Black locust, although mine would be a variation).

I am sure it would be up to Eyal if he decided to make it what it would be called, unless its just a one-time commission for yours truly. I am not *bleeping out sword manufacturer name* that is going to grip about suing someone over intellectual property rights - anyone can use anything I post up here other than my personal photos for some sort of sick sexual self-gratification. You can call your sword 'Black Locust' if you desire - I won't take offense!

Jonathan, That's a very elegant design. I like it very much. If Eyal decides to make it, and I were you, I would consider putting a lot more specifications about blade geometries into the design, and publicize them. I suggest including measurements of thickness at the guard, halfway down the blade, and an inch or two behind the tip. Also include some detailed description of the cross section of the last 4 inches, since that's a critical component of how an XVIIIb handles and performs. Nothing would aggravate you more than for DSA to make it, but change things for "ease of manufacture" and end up with a sword that isn't even close to what you designed. That was the experience both Rammstein and Adam had with their designs. They were both VERY frustrated with the results. Just my 2 cents...

The drawing is only a reference with some basic specs. Once the idea is agreed to be comissioned, I'll be using CAD to generate essentially blue prints and specs which I can post.
All of the tolerances would be to exacting dimensions. I'd not give someone a .bmp and expect them to build me a masterpiece. LOL... ;D
...and as for using my pictures for sexual purposes - you don't have to pay me. A kiss and some flowers would have made me feel pretty though...

Hey Bro, I really like that as it is drawn - it looks like a single hander. I like sinlge handers the best. When they are light and flickable. But your image belies the measurements marked out. It's like the image needs to be stretched out another 30%. If you don't have any joy with eyal send me a line, I could hook you up (as could BKS), though I've had a guts full of long blades. Bleeping 54" lowlander.... I got it right in the end, but urghh, it didn't want to stay straight real easily.
