New to the forum....so i have to ask a dumb question. I have about 300 dollars to spend on my next katana and am stuck between 2. The Hanwei Practical XL Katana or the Cold Steel warrior katana. Reading both descriptions.....both seem very durable. I have seen videos on both ...mainly cutting tests. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cant go wrong with a Hawei I guess. I havent fallen for the Hype, I would rather have a sword not many people have. For 300 dollars you can get a SBG Custom, if you can wait 8 weeks. Or a Ronin Swords Heianjo, which is a about the same wait time. Cheness Kaze is a proven cutter and would make a excellent first sword. Read some reviews, pick the one you like with the fittings you like.

well hey man, what's your priority for a sword? what do you like? what do you want to do with it? what sort of experience do you have with cutting and sword work in general?
I never liked hanwei until I got one. I would say for your FIRST sword, if you get a hanwei maybe try an elite or a traditional geometry as I understand they are more forgiving of slightly off edge alignment and less likely to chip out.
Hanwei Practical line, Cheness kaze or tenchi, Kris Cutlery 29A, SBG custom, Roninswords Heianjo are all about $300 and all what I would call good starter sword

Consider a Cheness 1060 Mokko: www.chenessinc.com/mokko.htmThat was my first blade. My experience has been that it is durable, cuts well, and retains its edge for a long time. Well worth the money spent for a starter katana. --Edward

Eh - Don't bother with either. Go with a Hanwei Practical Plus Katana (not elite or xl) and get it from Wiwingti for way under $300. Its a better sword in my opinion than a CS Warrior and the fittings are better quality (again in my opinion) than the Cheness Kaze. Not to mention its less expensive than both. Its also going to be a more robust blade than the XL geometry wise.

That's true sam, although the slimmer blade on the XL is going to be an amazing slicer.

Quite true there Bishop - the caveat there though is if your form and technique is good you won't need the XL.
I'm also old school so all of these "performance geometries" and "tameshigiri geometries" aren't my cup of tea. I think its cheating and can (according to my sensei and other instructors) teach laziness in students.

well I think plenty of us are just fools with sharp objects who like cuttin' stuff.

I would suggest the SBG custom katana or check Paul's stock on the SBG store. That way you can't miss......... ;D
