So this year I actually get to indulge a bit with my tax return. I want to choose one sword out of this list:
Hanwei Qi Jian Cheness Kurome Hanwei Bastard Sword (more like a two-hand!) Gen 2 Ranger Sword or any others that you may recommend

Did you have a max price? I ask because there is a huge difference in price between all of those.

What do you want to do with it, Spiral?

My max price is probably the cost of the Qi Jian, it being the most expensive piece. Ric, mostly target cutting and forms.

I don't know about forms, but the only one on your list that I have any experience with is the Hanwei Bastard. A good looking longsword it is tho is a bit of a challenge to cut with, for me anyway.

Well the Qi Jian is 500+ bucks...so that gives you a lot of play. You can get a proper Atrim arming sword for that price from fletcher. You can get an albion squire line. There is a lot of del tin available at KoA as well. If I have 500 bucks, that is what I would look at in the western sword department.

I own the Hanwei Bastard sword, and I must say, it is a nice and sturdy sword. However, in factory new condition (like all of Hanwei's euro swords), it will probably require some manual sharpening before its fit to cut well.

The sharpness of Hanwei's western swords has been the reason I dont already own the bastard sword. I have been eyeing the Gen2 ranger for quite a while, and the problems ShooterMike pointed out seem to have been fixed. Also, I dont yet own a western sword, all of mine are Chinese or Japanese. Oh, does anyone own or know anything about Hanwei's Scimitar?

Oh, does anyone own or know anything about Hanwei's Scimitar? Didn't even know they offered one...

Oh, does anyone own or know anything about Hanwei's Scimitar? The scimitar that they offer (as far as I can tell) is pretty much fantasy-styled (please correct me if I'm wrong here). I've handled it briefly, and since I'm used to Euro styled blades, it felt like a sharpened crowbar to me

Plenty of pics and comments on those here:

Consensus seems generally good.

Well, I have changed my mind. Since the SBG customs are back ordered, I decided to go with the cheness Kurome. I will replace the tsuba with a double ring style tsuba. Plus, I have always wanted a Shobu Zukuri style blade. The combination of that sword, a double ring tsuba, brown ito, and black same basically make it my dream Katana.

Oh I will, I know how much you guys like sword porn. From the SBG review it seems to be a great cutter, and the tip doesnt worry me. (I wont be trying to stab robots or anything) Does a cool "cut" include having a friend get excited about a new sword, not realizing it isnt sharp, then sending a water bottle flying towards my face? EDIT: Also, I will be ordering it through SBG Now just gotta wait for my tax return to get here...
