So my latest sword has arrived! Well I'm waiting to get a better camera so I can do a good revue of it, but I thought I would say some thing about it first for those that are thinking of getting one, It's very whippy... I would have liked to have seen more steel in the blade, when I do the revue you'll see what I mean...SanMarc.

The scabbard on that sword is crazy nice looking tho. Look forward to the review.

Right now I am waiting for a similar sword (the Windlass Sword of Tristan), I hope I won't have the same problem.

Yeh, the scabbard is really nice, the hilt and pommel are massive! makes the scabbard fittings look small in the pics, but are the right size............Seb, I look forward to your words on that sword as well...........SanMarc.

I wouldn't worry too much about extra flexibility in a Type X blade (like this one), which is primarily a dedicated cutter. Where whippiness kills the deal for me is in a blade that should have strong thrusting ability. I mean, if your blade flips around like a fish out of water, that can be distracting, but if it's just not very rigid feeling, I wouldn't sweat that. A thin, wide, flexible blade is what I prefer in a cutter, actually.

I understand what your saying, but when you hold the blade out flat in front of you, it sags, turn it over and it sags the other way, at 30" long, I would think it shouldn't do that and to some of the people that I showed it to who are experienced in Norse swords, they agree, It's to thin......SanMarc.

Sorry to read about the whippyness Sanmarc...
I agree with Kriegschwert here: as long as it's not a wiggling fish, it's not that bad for a cutter...but, still... It's weird thought, my 5-lobe viking is very stiff and there's not that much difference in blade length...althought blades are not identical...fullers are different lengths for one. Hmmm...weird because it is a not that long of a blade, 44 inches, I would understand, but 30-31?
Shadow, not all Windlasses are whippy, I own a few and the Euro sword for example is nice and stiff enough, the only whippy one I have is the Erbach...which others do not find whippy...it's still a good cutter...different batches, different stiffness levels maybe...
Anywoo...
Cheers

Oh no, don't misunderstand me. I do NOT mean to say all Windlass swords are whippy. I have a Windlass Ulfberht and there are many other Windlass swords which are great, and even a couple I wanna pick up before I end my collection of production swords. All I ment was, enough of Windlass swords *ARE* overly whippy that I am not surprised when I hear of it. Windlass is one of my favorite companies for production euro style swords.

Yeah, my Windlass Fantasy Viking is also very stiff, though my brother's Swedish Viking is so whippy that I wont cut with it.
Looking forward to the review Sanmarc!

Unless it's like a wet noodle, I would be botherd by it. Many originals of this type were quite flexible. The best description I ever heard was "Wow, this thing's so light and flexible. It's just like a long butcher knife." That was a description of a viking sword dated to about 850 AD that was found in Norway.
People who handle my Albion Reeve sometimes think it isn't even made of steel it's so light and flexible.

It's cool Shadow, sorry for the misunderstanding, it's just I think Windlass's swords get criticized often, so I simply wanted to put things into perspective...
Seb: congratulations on the new purchase, hope it turns allright! Looking forward reading the review!
Yours too, SanMarc!
Cheers,

Yep, thats the one, the scabbard is great, the hilt and pommel are huge compared though, and when I say the blade is whippy, I mean like a wet noodle, you can shake the sword in your hand and watch the blade whip!
.........SanMarc.

Oh, major bummer. Why would they let a blade like that out given all the decent blades they make on other viking sword? I can never figure Windlass out...

Yeah, I really like that scabbard. How about the edge itself? Did you opt for the sharpening service, if so how was it?
Also, is it peened or a threaded tang?
