Not sure who it was...I think maybe BrotherBanzai perhaps...that said they were a Conan fan but hadn't read any of Robert E Howards Conan stories. Well here you go: arthursclassicnovels.com/arthurs/howard/bebla10.htmlCan't seem to find the movie thread to post this back into lol...but this is a pretty good one. This is set later in his life, perhaps mid 30's or a bit later I think. After he was a pirate, but before he became King of Aquilonia. Cris

Kudos to you Cris. I've never read any of Conan's adventures before. But I think I'll start now with this one.
+ 1 2 U - after I recharge as I just karma'd Sabreur for his new 19th/20th century sabre/saber thread.

Thanks guys!
As you can see...RE Howard's Conan is a different beast altogether from Arnold's Conan. Sharper intelligence, and more instinctive cunning thrown in to boot lol. Again, this isn't taking anything away from Arnold (I did love the movies), but it's just not the same character lol. One of the best scenes of the movie was when they were all painted up and infiltrating the Thulsa Doom compound to capture the Princess, if I recall they had got her and were running away when the two lead 'thugs' entered. Arnold turned, spread his arms wide and got a new grip on his blade (great footwork and presence there!) and kept moving in a very graceful yet aggressive manner in the process of confronting the two. That, I think...is the closest to RE Howard's Conan that he ever came...and even then, there were things just...missing.
To be honest, I think what it is is just the large, broad, obvious gestures that were required to showcase Arnolds strengths as a body builder (you know, those huge swings and overdone cuts with that heavy sword), as compared to the huge yet lean, razor fast, predatory imagery RE Howard uses.
There's really a lot to think about in comparing the two lol. Sorta cool in a way.
Cris

It's almost like Howard read the Tarzan novels and a light bulb went off over his head. Why can't we have an ancient barbarian hero just like Tarzan? And so it is.

LOL, well for this story anyhow...most of them aren't set in the Pictish jungles. The buccaneer ones are a lot of fun, as are many of the ones based on his earlier life. There are even a few where he's a full on commander of an army. Cool stuff all the way around...and you can see how very little resemblance there is to the Arnold movie. Cris

VERY nice Erick! That's one I hadn't read =D. In reading through all the stories I have...you can see how they picked and chose between them to write the movie. I certainly hope the next one is good. Cris

Cris He became King at the early 30s of his life, he was a pirate for only 1,5 years. Some friends, collegueas from our league and me did a calculating about his life. We used the stories which are not included in his book and one of us had a look at the original manuscripts (of course not holding in his hands, but looking at sent pictures). Howard had included numbers of age and travel time but later decided to leave them away for more mystification.
