Sounds a little heavy, but what viking swords aren't? -Slayer Average viking swords were between 2 and 2.5lb. There are examples of viking swords up to 4lb but that was rare. If you don't believe me, check Albion viking swords. Albions are swords with a lot of research behind them and are regarded as the most historically correct if you are not going custom. And all viking Albions are lighter then 3lb. Most between 2 and 2.5.

Oh, cool! Thanks for the info, Luka, I was under the impression that viking swords were rather sluggish.
I appreciate your informative and non-arguementative response. +1!

Slayer: karma is meant to be for noteworthy posts not candy on halloween, just some food for thought, no need for karma.

I'd call that an informative/noteworthy post, wouldn't you?
Just IMO, at least...

I also thought it informative Slayer. + 1 2 U for understanding the Karma system. Good for you. WARNING: This *IS* the same forumite who started a 'begging for karma' thread' that resulted in him gaining some 9 or more pitty karma points. I can't say I agree with your statment of him "understanding the karma system"... unless by that you ment over-investing importance in the karma system and then 'gaming' it in order to gain more karma and the apperance of respectability. Now, that aside... The sword does seem a bit heavy for it's dimmensions. The lack of distal taper that absilits mentioned above is more likely the reason. My Windlass Viking sword is not much above 2lbs and handles very well. Also, as has already been addressed, it doesn't look much like a viking style blade... either in blade or fittings. There are certainly better options out there for viking swords. It *IS* very affordable... so if you like it, grab it. I would not pick this sword to filling a 'viking sword' slot in my collection tho.

Shadowhowler- That whole thread was a COMPLETE misunderstanding! My thread was NOT 'begging' for karma, it was merely asking people what they thought would be likely to gain someone karma (as in, what actions were karma-worthy). I included an admittedly lame joke about giving karma to anyone who would +1 me, and some people took it the wrong way and thought that I was stooping so low as to BEG for karma! Even I'm not THAT lame , lol. I mentioned this fact numorous times in the 'KARMA' thread, but you probably didn't see that, otherwise you wouldn't have posted what you did. Thanks, I just wanted to clear that up, no hard feelings! -Slayer

Oh, and I only gained 6 misbegotten karma by that thread, all others were earned ligitimately.
Please understand that getting 'free' karma was NOT my goal whatsoever.

To add to what Luka said, type X blades were thin, made for cutting, not thrusting. Unless you had a hilt made of lead, the weight shouldn't come close to 3lbs, let alone 3.5lbs.
Then again, stiff, thick blades seem to be what's popular right now. I've often wondered if acceptable Type X's to a viking would have been considered whippy to us, or if it's just improper heat treat by some manufacturers (Windlass, I'm looking at you)...

De nada Slayer !! "Karma is basically a way of measuring a forumites relative popularity and as a reward for a particularly informative or interesting post. Karma is also frequently awarded by fellow forumites for a correct answer to a question in the ‘official sword quiz’." Btw, if you like the sword, there is nothing wrong with it if you present it as a 12th or 13th century sword. The pommel is typical for German swords of 12th and 13th century. It will still be a cheap sword and you risk with buying it but you don't have to be worried with its historical accuracy. At least with the general appearance of the sword. And the blade is not really a type X. It looks more like Xa or XI.

I think you should go ahead and get it. It's a cheap sword yes, but allot of their new tempered products actually serve pretty nicely. I actually bought a Strongblade Crusader sword recently with tempering. I think it's a great sword really! www.strongblade.com/prod/sba-dominuscrusader.html There's even a couple of videos of this sword in cutting tests out there on youtube. It's a bit heavy, but handles nicely and I plan on doing a review soon. If you're going for a cheaper sword that is decent for light sparring and cutting, get the tempered version of the Osprey Viking. Don't forget to use the discount from SBG either, helped me out with my purchase.
