I have been collecting Japanese swords for years and have recently started to aquire newly made blades for cutting exercises.
Now Im looking for my first European sword. I was thinking Hand and a Half, or Bastard or something like that. I want it to be sharp and tough as I intend to cut with it. Any suggestions?

What do you plan on cutting? Bottles? mats? Bamboo? Steel drums? I don't recommend the last.
Also what is your price point? Sub 300...sub 200?

I was thinking $200-$300. I wasnt going to cut crazy stuff. Just jugs and mats.

So I guess the next question is is there an era your interested in?
Otherwise some good choices are
Valiant Atrim practical longsword Gen 2 lucerne Gen 2 black prince Hanwei hand and a half sword Windlass erbach sword
Those are my top picks for a longsword in that price range. They are all very good choices.
I haven't tried these two...but shootermike like the longsword and tinker says the bastard sword came out better so these might also be worth a shot as well.
Hanwei tinkerline longsword Hanwei tinkerline bastard sword
I haven't seen these in person yet however...but they sound like they will be very good swords as well.

Dave, my first question would be "Dedicated two-hander? Or is single-hand use a requirement, ala sword&shield?"
If using as a two hander, then I suggest you not limit yourself to a Hand&aHalf design. But if you want something to use with a shield, then that rules out the dedicated longswords.
In the H&aHalf category I've been reasonably impressed with these (in no particular order):
CAS Hanwei Albrecht Hand&aHalf CAS Hanwei Edward III Gen2 Lucerne & Black Prince Valiant Armoury ATrim Practical "tuned" longsword MRL/Windlass Braunstone MRL/Windlass Verneuil Hand and a Half MRL/Windlass Erbach Bastard Sword ... But I am willing that the CAS Hanwei Tinker Pearce Sharpened Bastard Sword will be the best of the lot.
As for dedicated longswords, I really like:
CAS Hanwei Tinker Pearce Sharpened Longsword MRL/Windlass Long Sword MRL/Windlass 15th Century Longsword

helloooooo dave .......... BEEP .......... Yeah most of what everyone has said above is a good area to shoot for ........ If your coming off katanas (light weight two handed style) maybe grab a nice longsword (hey you could even bastardise the japanese form with a two hander) or if you REALLY wanna "seachange" a single handed blade is the way to go ......... after all its where it all started in europe ........ Darksword Armoury are good for euro swords that are structurally sound and you dont have to treat like bone china ........ their weights are a little more then adverage but dimensions and balance sound (I have a DSA 2H Gothic very good as a beefy 2 Hander) ........... yeah and hey Single handed sword paired with either offhand weapon (axe, mace, dagger) is interesting or even an open hand is ........ ehem ..... handy

Some good advice all. Now I just need to narrow down the period and style. I will do a little research with the info you provided.

I trust Shooter Mike's opinion on western swords a lot. I have a custom tuned practical Arming sword from Valiant Armory and I'd say that if the long sword is anywhere near the same quality then it is one heck of a good deal. as far as I know the practical long is the same thing as the arming just longer with a longer hilt.
also I'm just not happy with 90% of the sub $300 western swords on the market. yeah my windlass late spanish is pretty good but it was also sub $200 and that's what really made it worth while, that and I bought it as a sparring sword so I don't care how well it cuts.
being a katana guy you should prepare yourself for the fact that most of the western swords you'll find are not as stiff as you are used to.

As an additional point of clarification, and in my opinion...
If the real ATrim-made swords are the baseline of 10-out-of-10 for the design, I would rate the tuned longsword as an 8 and the tuned arming sword as a 6. I have had several tuned versions of each and I think the longsword is that much better.

Well for buying KoA is a good start to browse and see what you want. Tons of selection, good CS and really low prices. Although AoV has the best prices for gen 2 swords as they have a 10% discount for SBG members. For research into any time period your interested in...humm check out myarmoury's feature section or just start cracking open some history books .
