So I'm looking for a Katzbalger sword for a landsknecht costume. I've looked at a few shops so far and have only found a deepeeka. Has anyone handled this sword before? Has anyone found any from other brands?

Hi there Kaempfer, I know of at least two European (Czech) smiths who have the Katzbalger in there catalog ... www.kovexars.cz... www.swords.czBoth make first class swords that are historically spoken very accurate and what KOVEXARS concerns for a reasonable price ! Good luck ! Hugh

Wow, that hand and a half would be nice to have, but I can't imagine how much it would cost. Thanks for the help, guys, but the deepeeka at KOA is the only one I can afford any time soon.

hello kaempfer .. the deepeeka katzbalger isn't bad at all .. it's heavy for being a katzabalger but it is strong and well builted, i sold mine (i need a few money) .. it's like a little beast , the wood grip allows just one hand and if you're not well trained (workout) you'll have a little wrist pain .. the fuller and the blade is stiff .. i never used it for cutting test or hit something but it's pretty decent.. the ring guard it's heavy and makes an extraweight in the handle .. if you purchase it you'll see. the tang is threated hmm.. what else?.. hmm .. i think that's all .. it's a good value for the price.. hope this helps! ..

Thanks, Mordrent, that helps a lot! I really like heavy hackers, so I should like it.

Don't get the Deepeeka, its way off base historically and can never be made combat-ready.
I'd look around to see if anyone had any of the Windlass ones left in stock gathering dust. I bought mine on closeout back in June directly from Windlass for $75.00. It's the one that came with the two-piece utensil set mounted in the side of the scabbard. I consider to to be one of the better deals I have gotten from them because its solid as hell and makes a wicked little cutter falling within historical Cat Gutter specifications.
Or, you could save a little bit and go for the DSA version.

Depeeka is notorious for being completely non-functional and ugly.
Their blades are soft as butter.

I handled Windlass Katzbalger in a shop few days ago. I liked it. It feels solid and quite well balanced. Practical little sword that would cut quite well I think.
Edit: Don't buy Deepeka! It's 4lb 7oz! And it should be a single hander!

Nice work Luka !! How did you come across this guy ... reasonable price ... This is quiet an understatement ! These prices extremely low Are you familiar with his work ? I agree they are low, but the starter of the topic wrote that he can't afford anything more expensive then Deepeka... I came across this guy through a local dealer here in Croatia who recommended it to me as a good, durable swords that are looking good and historical and have low prices. They are well known and praised in Italy, mostly for stage combat and reenactment. When blunt they are a bit heavy as most of the blunts, but when ordered sharp they are very well balanced and have "normal" weights. I haven't seen them in person but my dealer is very pleased with a batch that he got recently (his opinion is that even blunts that he now has in store are very well balanced and light compared to most other blunts he handled before) so I placed an order for one nice sharp viking sword type H. I'll post a picture of it. The steel is if I'm not mistaken the same as in Del Tin blades and the hardness is 48-54. I'll post impressions when I see Viktor's work in person. This is the sword I ordered, but my will be sharp and with more parallel blade with less profile taper. Here are the topics about Viktor's work on myarmoury: www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=14656www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=14852&highlight=hungarian+sabers

I've been browsing around a bit among the Czech smith's but this guy really beets everything !! That's why I was wondering if you where acquainted with his work ... This Hungarian guy is certainly worth considering !! By the way thank's for the links Luka !
