Ok I've finally got together the video on sharpening/polishing that I've been working on. it's not all of what I wanted but the youtube 10 minutes limit and technical problems with my camera really made this project challenging.
anyway here it is in two parts.

Thank you for including both Japanese and European blades. Always helps in avoiding stupid s*** storms.
Great video tutorial! That's just about exactly how I do it.

the hamon will dissapear at first, especially in the lower grits, but it will come back in the 1000 - 2000 grit polishes especially if you use long length-ways strokes. I also polish with metal glo after but you don't need to

Tom, thanks for the vid, most detailed and informative tutorial on the subject I've seen. I second Slav's comment about covering both genre's. +1

Yes, thanks! Very good tutorial.
Two things I wonder. About knives I´ve heard some say never to sharpen with the paper or stone "away from the edge. Always against like slicing a bit of the paper or stone. Because polishing or sharpen with the stone or paper away from the edge could cause small portions of the material on the edge to fall of, loosen up i an irregular way and that could destroy the edge.
That´s not the case when it comes to swords then?
And are there any trick to help keep the original geometry of the blade?

watch your scratch pattern. as long as you are making even scratches you should be ok. as for knives, that's the way I was taught too. If you think about stropping a razor, that's basically what you are doing with the paper stropping though at a coarser grit. going in the slicing direction has never worked well for me unless I was doing a rough shaping/sharpening. I think if you have a flat spot on your blade or a rolled edge then going in a cuting direction could be good. I think it more aggressively attacks the edge thus making it easy to over shoot and mess up when you are getting close to being done.

Very nice and well done Tom. I hope you win the UBC contest since thus far (no offense to any other entries) yours seems to be the best one.
