I've been eyeing this sword for a few months. It appears to be modeled on the old VA Mercenary frame with better quality hardware, leather wrapped grip, and comes with a wood core scabbard. since I get my wholesale distribution price on it, I was considering getting one and doing some considerable customization to work on some of my cutler skills. I really like the looks of this sword and just have a mental image of how it could be.
I was planning on flattening and rounding off the ends of the cross guard and adding some end detail, giving it a good grip treatment with triple risers, rounding off the pommel, antiquing the hardware and blade, rehoning the edge, rewrapping the scabbard and adding a period belt.
Question is, does anyone own one and have some thoughts on it? Does it qualify as a good beater or are there problems with it (ie...thin tang, cheap wood, bad welds, improper temper) that will prevent it from ever being made into a good cutter?
Thanks in advance for your input on the matter!

I'm feeling dense - I'm looking at the cas iberia site, and I can't find it... do you have a link?

As far as my internet search has helped me, the Templar is a discontinued model.

Your Google Fu is weak, Grasshopper... It's not discontinued. It's simply a brand new model. It's part of the new CAS lineup of inexpensive battle ready weapons bearing the Hanwei name. I can get them on my distribution website, but here is the Hanwei link. My price is far less which I why I was interested in if it was of good enough quality for a project. The model number is PC2368 or SH2368 (depending on where you order from). www.cashanwei.com/product_details.asp?id=SH2368

Ah, I was searching for a Hanwei sword under the name "Templar" whereas it is listed as the "Mercenary."

Odin, I don't have that one, but I reviewed the Lionheart /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=4781&page=1 which is from the same line. I'd expect the Mercenary to be similar in many ways. If so, It should be a very decent beater/backyard hacker, but I'm guessing the edges are probably sharpened the same way as the Lionheart, so they'll take some work to thin down for bottle and other light target cutting.

I'm not so suprised this hasn't been discussed, as it has been a holiday weekend. There are some old bones about these swords out there. I would be extremely suprised that there has been much, if any real change to the characteristics of this line. Here are a couple of oldies that are now gone off the front page of NetSword. Here are some of Gus' old Twilight Door reviews of the old CAS line. www.netsword.com/weapontest.htmlHere is the Mercenary www.netsword.com/review081-PP.htmlAn old thread from Nathan and others here. Oddly somewhat like the thread posted here and at myArmoury recently. netsword.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000958.htmlIf one looks in the archive section of NetSword, there are some more threads Gus had put up. Honestly, I don't see much has changed regarding the line. If anything, one could hope they are better but why make it that tough unless someone is just terribly fond with the item, it seems a lot of work to acheive the end. It was not so much of a consideration before the floods of available goodun's in this decade. Still, I have a friend that shaved a Del Tin very much for the same reasons. I'm not likely to see him go to the trouble again but it was a project he tinkered around with for a few years. Somewhere there are links at NetSword regarding the way old Paul Chen chat transcript and some other things. wizard said some are still there somewhere and I did find some files, like Gus' old reviews but Wiz chopped a bunch off the front page, leaving me to fend for my own to find them. Classics in their own time but likely to be of real use out of curiousity sake. Also check the old reviews of the front page for swowrdforum.com and scrape through every link you can find, including the old ezines from 1999. Oh ya, then there is Nathan's page of swords, including his tweaked Merc www.myarmoury.com/swor_cust_merc.html?18Cheers Hotspur; what is new was often quite oldThe wonderful wiz he was/is. Here it is, the missing page www.netsword.com/features.htmlAlso please excuse my short bus brain at this point. I did lose a good portion of grey matter last month.

Hello
Oh, THAT sword. The naming issue confused me.
Anyway, I have handled this store, briefly (perhaps 30 seconds?) , in a store in Montreal, about 7 months ago. I was not impressed. It seemed too heavy and unwieldy - I would take the hanwei hand and a half in a hearbeat over that one. I did get the impression it was solid though.
My trainer offered me a sweet deal on that one (he also sells hanwei), but I turned it down, I just wasn't interested.
I know that's not a very positive impression, but that's it. Keep in mind that my inspection of this sword was very quick.
Ancalagon
edit: because of the sword's location, it may not be the "revamped" one, but the weight currently listed on the site matches my impression of "quite heavy".

Well, based on what I have seen, I don't think I will be getting one. I kind of fell in love with what Nathan did with his, but I think that the end result would be a nice looking wallhanger.
Thanks for all your your input!
