ello, need some help IDing these 2 marks on a pattern 1742 sword. A thick arrow and a box with lines crossing in the box. Blade is thick and about 28 1/2 inches long, no fuller, and it is a half guard. I know this pattern was around for 70-80 years in Europe. Thanks

Man, I think I have seen that square mark before, but can't place it. Do you have a better picture/more pictures? Filesizelimit is 1mb/file, so no need to go that small. Could that arrow be damage? Can't tell.

I had a hard enough time getting the pic down to 1mb but no the arrow is not damage just as you see it and no not a common British arrow marking.

According to what I see it's not 1mb but 20kb and 240x320 pixels, that's very small to be honest. I bet if you resize the original to 1500x2000 it's still going to be under 1mb but much more visible. I think it reminds me of a spanish proof mark with a bird inside the square but again, can't really make it out, also why I asked if the arrow was damage since I honestly can't make it out.

Scratching my head I see the pic fine here. It's a double line Square with crossing lines in the box, simple marking. The arrow is just that but thicker than what I've seen on British swords.

Strange I click on it and it expands much larger. Try a magnifying glass, that works too

The thumbnail in the post (blade to the right) has 2,88 kb, the expanded picture (blade downwards) has 21,44 kb. Indeed the difference in picture quality isn't very obvious.

canyou show us the whole sword, as well? If one squints...it MIGHT look like a Wundes (Solingen) King's head mark. They used a King's head pre 1770 (Weyersberg bought the king's head mark from them then). Dunno what the waffle mark is.

I had a hard enough time reducing it to get on this website. Just open up a George Neumann book and there are plenty of examples of what they called a 1742 pattern. "Kings Head" how you see that? It looks like an arrow! My Thanks to the Man that blew up the pic above.

the part that you might refer to as the fletchings of an arrow also look quite a bit like a bad impression of one of the king's head stamps from the various versions from the Wundes family. IF held in the hand with the tip of the sword facing up, it could be a badly struck kings head. BTW..I said "might be" not "is".

Yeah sorry I don't think so there madirish but if anyone has Christian Aries book No 2 1967 Figs 1-4 I believe about French swords I heard it's shown in there. Sadly I can't find a copy of it anywhere

Again, do you have pics of the entire sword?
