Hello all, I am new here and have an opportunity to get a blade that has heavy folded pattern, with a straight hamon. My question is to know if this is a quality blade, given it has a heavy folded pattern? Most blades that are folded, don't have such distinct lines. Thoughts?

Pictures would help us to help you. "Heavy folded pattern" doesn't sound well.

That's not that heavy folded, if it was the pattern wouldn't show up as weel as it does.

Hmm I guess my next question is, what is the potential for this to be a quality blade?

Hmm I guess my next question is, what is the potential for this to be a quality blade? That's more a question of the whole sword, where it came from and who made it than the look of the steel. Probably needed: Pic of whole sword, close-up of grip and tuba, pic of tang and saya.
The chinese have become pretty good at producing masses of such steel. Also what do you mean by quality? Will the steel fail when you use it? If everything else is in order and the tempering was done correctly, No. Is it worth much? That depends on the things mentioned above.

Sadly I don't have more pics at the moment but I can say that the Saya has a Saya hook and it has what looks like Buffalo horn at the opening. Ray skin has lots of larger nodes and about 3 right in the middle of 3 of the diamonds. The fittings look exactly like some from Tozando or Yamato websites. That's about all the info I have atm.

It looks like it is what the chinese call "damascus," with carbon steel of some kind at the edge. I don't actually see a proper hamon line, and the polish is pretty uneven. This sword could be through hardened. All these point to relatively low quality in my opinion.

Lol that's a great question. I have no idea. Just have the small back story to it and trying to determine what's the worth, so I can make an offer

Without more pictures or the maker, your guess is as good as ours unfortunately. Could be a 100$ chinese blade, could be a bad picture where you don't see the Hamon.

I wish I knew more. I just don't see many high quality blades with that much of a pattern and that causes pause to me to question it. Maybe that's my main concern.

Bump. Anyone have some thoughts on these pics above? Looks mid tier Chinese production katana so between around $200-$400 original retail. With due to the cheaper fittings probably on the lower half of that estimate.

Close match to Tozando

I'm kinda confused. Definitely a Chinatana but not a bad one at all. From what I see:
- fittings are definitely Japan imported, could be Ikedaart, Tozando or Noshudo. GOOD - samegawa is premium. Never seen a Chinatana with such large nodes. GOOD - for identical reasons, it might be fake. BAD - end knots are reversed. Typical in China, impossible in Japan. BAD - seppa is custom. GOOD - saya is not a production one, at least not one that I know. GOOD - but is also looks cheap. BAD
I'd say offer $300 and see what happens.
