Okay the video of this sword is awesome, but I've heard bad things about this sword too and Cold Steel. Are these old opinions still true? I wouldn't mind taking a chance on the sword if I thought Cold Steel would back up their product if I got a bad one.

What do you mean with 'bad things'? That sword is made for hacking. It cuts everything. That's what it is made for. And this it does perfectly. Don't try fencing with this one. It's not made for fencing. You won't use an axe for foil-fencing, would you?

ahhh the grosse messer....my love...i bought one not to far back from thebladeshop.com for 160$+free shipping and the guard was slightly wiggly but were talking get a little glue and put it down there with toothpick to fill the gaps..but back on topic its a great blade! its VERY sharp the point is very...pointy? but yes and despite it being a fairly large sword and heavy it dosent feel that way at all its superbly balanced and the polish on the blade is mirror so it looks to good to mess up and the sheath it comes with is very nice also wood core with leather over it and blued steel throat and chape its a very nice sword i would highly recommend it also heres a link to where you can find it the cheapest you can ever possibly get it for brand new www.thebladeshop.com/Cold_Steel_88GMS_Grosse_Messer_Leather_Scabbard_p/88gms.htm

What I heard about the sword was something about it breaking on the rivets while hitting pumpkins. I think the thread is still on the forum, but I'm too lazy to find it. I also remember something about them being difficult to communicate with.

I also remember something about them being difficult to communicate with. Those were the old cold steel messers. The newer ones don't have this problem.

the new ones have the extra heavy pommel and it balances out very nicely but still if you are looking for a sword for looking good on a wall and doing some back yard cutting i would recommend this sword highly

I'm one who had the older version. It was overly blade heavy and the hilt was terrible. The pommel was screwed onto a welded all-thread rod. The rod was clearly attached after heat treat. It broke off immediately upon usage. And the handles split length-wise. And the edges on the blade were so soft that they rolled 90 degrees when I tapped the blade into a pine 4x4. It was a terrible excuse for a sword. I've stayed away from them ever since. But I like the concept of the Grosse Messer, and no way am I shelling out for an Albion Knecht. I would be really interested in seeing how well they are making them now. If anyone has or gets a new one, please do a thorough review? Please...

Just got my new Grosse Messer today from KOA. Ordered on 10/23/08 but KOA wouldn't ship out their stock because of loose guard problem. They waited until they got a good won in before they would send it to me. +1 for KOA. Very pleased with the sword. This is the sharpest sword out of the box I have received to date including several katana's (1601, Ryumon Hand Painted dragon, etc.) I have several Cold Steel swords and all have been very good accept for the 2- Hander which is very disappointing. I would say that if your worried that a sword might be sub par for any reason then do your business with a good company like Kult of Athena. They pre inspect and won't send a sword out until they're pleased and then there is the 45 day return policy. I don't know yet whether the edge will hold up to hacking wood but this one didn't disappoint out of the box!

I think the new Grosse Messers are fine, its good because Cold Steel make heavy durables and its just the style of sword you want those qualities for. I have Cold Steels Cutlass, Light Cavalry and Napoleon Sabres and while they are well made and solid they are heavy and difficult to wield with subtley and speed and also came sharp as butter knives. Being an Aussie I put a big wad of cash into them and I have only mild affection for them, probably alot of people who get their heavy monosteel katanas get the same vibe cause their constitution outweighs (indeed) their character. But a Gross Messer is all business so heavy suits it ...... yeah the newer ones got a better rep.

Hey 'ya, Are there any outward differences between the old & revised (new) version of the CS Grosse Messer? I mean, if I were to look the the retailers' online catalogs, any ways to tell if that was an old version or revised version piece? Thanks in advance

Not that I'm aware of. I think they look the same so you would want to get one from a retailer that has a high turn over rate so that there wouldn't be any old ones left in stock. Also a reputable dealer would tell you an approximate production date if asked. The loose guard problem is or was with current production swords so KOA wouldn't ship me one untill a good one came in. They may have several good ones in stock now. They also have a great price.

I've heard the Grosse Messer is actually pretty good. As someone said, it must have been an older production model.
I know Cold Steel doesn't actually forge their own swords, I've heard they contract the work out to other sword makers. Maybe they changed makers somewhere down the line?

What? They don't forge their swords by their own? No that's cheap ;-p

Actually, some of their swords are good and some not so much. The Shamshir is made by Windlass and their other swords are made by several manufacturers. So not necessarily cheap but QC and quality of design varies depending on which sword your talking about. The Gim is excellent and the Shamshir and Heavy Sword Cane are good. The newer Grosse Messer is good if you don't get one out of the batch with loose guards. The 2-Hander and Bastard swords suffer from poor grip/pommel designs. These are the CS swords that I have personal experience with. I have heard good and bad about many of their other swords as well.

You obviously haven't seen my review of the messer have you?? They are good swords, if you get one that doesn't have any issues. Unfortunately I got one that did. I would say buy from a reputable vendor like KOA or swordsofmight. Remember SOM does price match so you can get it 10 dollars cheaper than the cheapest place u find, i think KOA does price match too.
Be sure to check out my review of it in the sword reviews section, i did it recently, so it's probably in the first or second page of reviews. It's a video showing you everything that was wrong with it.

Yeah, I saw the review and you got a lemon for sure. I got mine from KOA and they refused to ship one to me untill they got a good batch in.....took a month......loose guards was the problem. I ordered 10/23/08 and received it 12/02/08. Mine was great and I haven't heard of anyone else having the scabbard trouble yours had. Better luck next time!!!
