Hi all,
I'm thinking of either purchasing the DSA Norman or Squire sword. Which one do you think is better? This is my first sword.
Thanks!

Well, between those two specificly I like the look of the DSA norman sword a whole lot more... and from what I have heard/read it's a VERY solid blade.

Thanks for the reply! So, do you like the DSA Norman or the Generation2 Black Prince better? Thanks!

The norman is more of a cutting oriented sword and the black knight (I'm assuming you mean the DSA black knight) is more of a cut and thrust oriented sword. So which you like is gonna be highly biased on which style of sword you like better. Of course, there is always the question of what do you plan on DOING with the sword?

Well, if he comes up against any marauding 55gal drums, he would be able to dispatch them with ease...... ......SanMarc.

Based upon my own experience with the Squire I own, and the stats I see for the Norman...yeah, the Norman would probably be the better choice. The Squire is a beautiful sword, but its point of balance makes it a tad unwieldy.
If by Black Prince you might mean the Generation 2 Black Prince, I would actually go with the Black Prince based upon what I have read of it. The new iteration of it is not that far off the original sword (save the meaty grip) and very nicely balanced.
Not to be a stinker, but if you are looking at something along the lines of a Type X-ish sword (based on your looking at the Squire and Norman), you would probably not go wrong to take a good look at the Valiant Armory Castile (either the base model with its simple scabbard or the more expensive, yet quite beautiful Signature version). This sword seems to be quite excellent, and I will quite likely get a Signature sword myself (though it will be the Bristol if I do; I'm batting between that and an Albion, but I think the lack of a scabbard with the Albion may decide it for me).

I don't want to derail the thread but from what we're seen of the new Valiant Armoury series they are quite a different product to Albions... I guess it just seems a bit funny to me that you'd make the decision based upon the presence of a scabbard when the cost/quality of the swords are on different levels. Scabbards can come cheap if you must have one!

nethack: I like the Gen2 Black Prince alot more then the DSA Norman sword... but they are very differant swords to me. The Black Prince is a hand and a half sword... and the Norman is a One handed sword. Also, the blades are very differant. If it were pick one or the other, I'd go with the black Prince... but I would not really put the two swords on the same table. Vyapada: While you can get a scabbard anywhere, the scabbards for the new VA swords are of MUCH better quality. Even the base swords come with a VERY above avarage scabbard. If thats important to him that might be a key as to why he is thinking of going that way.

Like I said above... the Black Prince and the Norman sword are very differant. About 5in of blade and even more then that of grip. Take your time... figure out what sort of sword you want, what you want it to do and how you want to use it... then look for swords that fit the bill... THEN select which one of those best suits your fancy and that you trust to be a good product.

San Marc made a good point there, you have to be warned : YOU WILL BUY MORE. I hear you already after reading this, ''nah, i can control myself, i just want to decide between those two'' no, no, no, thats a trap ! To be certain of your choice you probably surfed the net and compared between a thousand others models that are now hiding in your subconscious waiting their turn to haunt you relentlessly until you have a little moment of weakness and then BANG !

It's so true... Only my abject poverty keeps me from buying more swords then I already do. Had I more disposable income, my house would be COVERED in swords. As it is, I spend more then I should anyway. But... but... admiting I have a problem is the first step to getting better... right?
