So as some of you may know I am looking at one of the old ATrim 1503b swords from lee's armoury. From what I hear, while these swords have really good blade quality but very simple, so-so hilt, guard and pommel construction, they are very good for a customization project. So, i was thinking that the 1503b would be a good blade to try and make into a schiavona style sword. So, does anyone have any idea of how to make/acquire a schiavona style basket and a cats head pommel? Also, pictures for ideas would be most welcome!

Though they make what is probably best described as "munitions grade" pieces, I have been happy with a rapier guard I got from Darkwood armory. Here is a schiavona they show as in-stock. It should give you an idea of what they could make for you. Peruse their site. There's some interesting stuff there. When I called and ordered from them I just said I wanted my guard build for an ATrim blade and they already knew the tang measurements.

I bought the guard from this sword. I don't remember exactly what it cost, but it was reasonable. They will do custom work. If you're interested, just give them a call. They were plenty friendly and accomodating on the phone. Contact info is: Darkwood Armory 1607 Bush Dairy Rd Laurel, MS 39440 601-518-3508

I'm in agreement with Mike on Darkwood being a good avenue to start with. Scott Wilson does grand work and sure he could do something you would be pleased with.
Making a schiavona basket would be a major, major task. I've heard from some of the top custom makers that style of basket is one of the most challenging.
another option would be to find someone willing to part with one of the old Windlass schiavona's (type 1 or 2) and dismantle it for the basket. (I'm gald I was fortunate enough to grab one of the type 2's before they disappeared fromthe Windlass line-up)
Cheers,
Bill

BKS may be able to help you. For a really unique basket hilt for sure. I'm not sure how his tack welding is for the Schi' but he can probably help you make something MAD!
