Cloudhammer Katana - Practical Entry Level - 51crv4 German Spring Steel - Iron Fittings. Short Review.

On the norm I usually don’t buy brands that haven’t been around for a while. Thought I would give this one a try with all the glowing reviews.
I decided on the Practical Entry Level - 51crv4 German Spring Steel that was listed with scratches on the blade, What I wasn’t expecting was the kasira having a major ledge.
I reached out to John at RVA about this, he read the message with no reply, the next day I sent a second FB message. Of which he did reply:
“this was from their first batch, and some had ledges on the kashira and fuchi. That's part of the reason we marked them down from 350 to 300, and then down to 250. If this is unacceptable, I can send you a shipping label to send it back, and refund you.”
No where in the ad was it stated about the above.
The blade scratches are very light, will be simple to remove. Blade sharpness is poor, wouldn’t even cut paper. Leather strop took care of that. Blade polish is much better than anything else in this price range.
On to the saya fit. Was on very tight. I let it sit at room temperature for 3 days before making any adjustments. Even after 3 days the fit was very tight. Some filing took care of that. You have to be careful how you slide in the blade, wrong way and it just stops about a ½ inch in.
In the end I decided to keep it. Mainly because of the steel. I fixed the ledge from the kashira with a thin molded piece of delrin, was fairly easy to slide under the leather ito.
RVA customer service after they read the second message is fast and excellent for a return.
Pros:
1. Blade polish
2. Leather ito wrap on tight.
3. Iron tsuba
4. Decent sageo
Cons:
1. Kashira and fuchi ledges
2. Dull edge
3. Very tight saya fit and can hang up inside if not slid in just right.
4. Kashira and fuchi bright gold color. “I painted them black.
Would I buy another CloudHammer? They need to step up a few things. Like the cheap tiny node samegawa and inlay it on the higher end models. Stop adding the flashy fittings. Yes I know some can be customized to avoid the pimp Daddy look. I looked hard at the S5 steel, though at the price point of $625. Z-Sey is cheaper for S7 $499.
