Hi, during the holidays I've rewatched two movies in TV I didn't see for years. ... with swords and swordfights! I liked them and want to let you know. First: On Guard/Le Bossu French movie from Philippe de Broca

Does a couple months count as recent? The Mask of Zorro
Classic 90's swashbuckling action, what more do you need? Princess MononokeJust flat out one of my favorite movies, full stop. Like, permanent top three. BecketNothing really in the way of swords but a great film showcasing a fictionalized friendship tuned sour between Henry II and Thomas Becket. The Hidden FortressJust a fun and lighthearted adventure film from Akira Kurosawa I saw on HBO.

Andi I loved both of those movies, but especially On Guard, such a great movie with nice rapier blade work and great story.

Fun fact about the Hidden Fortress, it was rumored that George Lucas based star wars on that film if I am remembering the story correctly.

yep. lots of similarities. 2 bumbling peasants that are like R2D2 and Threepio. It's been years since I've watched it.
I watched 13 Assassins last month and that's always good.
In the last month I've watched the Centurion again and I also watched Milius and Arnold talkover Conan which I really enjoyed since I had never gotten around to it.
Watched the Northman a few months ago. And 13th Warrior of course as I can pretty much watch it at the drop of a hat like "The Hunted."
Probably some other stuff I can't remember offhand.

Movie : Season of the Witch, Gladiator, The Eagle, The Warlord, El Sid, Ironclad, Kingdom of Heaven directors cut, Robin Hood all three of them Crow, Costner and Flynn. Lord of the Rings all of them. Series : The Last Kingdom, Ivanhoe, Knightfall and Arn The Knight Templar the series not the shortened movie. I don't get TV reception up here so it's DVD's or nothing.

I made an Andi's Special Cut of Arn with most scenes with Arn, mostly fighting, not much of the love story or annoying convent stuff, 1 1/2 very entertaining hours. Didn't let him die too. My Rob Roy Special Cut is even much shorter.
Now I'm watching Arn again!

Ironclad - Great craic. Dubious quality. Like a McDonald’s.
The Princess Bride - One of my all time favourite movies and books of all time.

Recently watched Excalibur (1981) and damn what a great adaptation of legend of King Arthur that was. Sure it's campy as all get out, but it's absolutely gorgeous and captures the spirit of the Arthurian mythos better than any other movie I've seen.

There are historical documentaries with swords! No dramaturgical story BS and they use shields before, after and during (!!!) battles.

I had only ever seen one or two clips so I never even knew it was a musical. Took me a bit by surprise but I got into it real quick afterwards. I thought the scene with Arthur explaining how courts work to Pellinor was hilarious. I also forgot that I watched Olivier's Henry V again earlier this year as well.

In Germany we have many German docus but also much reworked UK and other countries' stuff. So I don't have the titles for YouTube or foreign TV. I'm recording it from our TV over many years and have a good collection.

Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking, east, south, far away into dark and danger.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon... wishing I had a jian!
Also watching Buffy reruns for like the third time with my Purna-made Awl of the Father.
Waiting to watch Fellowship with my KoA Strider.
Also saw the animated Hobbit recent holding my Devil's Edge xiphos (my version of Sting)

Rewateched jet li's fearless not too long ago, always loved the fight scene with the Japanese swordsman
Also highly recommend Dororo for those of the anime persuasion, on top of some really tight animation the story is just classic and shows the uglier side of the samurai rule.
