Interesting by itself, but also because I see some sabres I think I know.
Officer and Trooper with M1822 type sabres at 0.54. At first I thought the Trooper carried an M1854 but I think this one has the M1822 basket too, but the blade sure does look quite straight. Interesting is that both have the second generation double ring furniture. Would have thought that by 1896 this was replaced by the single ring. Anyway, first time for me to see Cavalry dudes moving around. Better than static old photographs.
Cheers.

Are they Dragoons from Saxony or some sort of Papal Swiss Guards cavalry?

Are they Dragoons from Saxony or some sort of Papal Swiss Guards cavalry? Noble Guard I do believe, the helmet is much closer to the italian style and the navy blue double breasted coat makes me think it is them as well!

I think the Swiss Guards are standing behind the Pope in the opening scene. The guys with the spiked helmets holding the piques. They wear the Guards uniform with the coloured vertical stripes or bands. As for the rest, I think they may be French or Italian regular Cavalry. The background and surroundings look Southern European to me. It should be easy to figure out where this movie was made. We have the year 1896 and all it would take is to delve into this Popes schedule for that year. It certainly was a grand occassion, with all bells and whistles, so this would show up in the paperwork I think.
Noble Guard? What are those? The Officer riding along side the carriage has a lot of decorations, so would have seen lots of combat?
Cheers.
