I've only caught a bit of HoD because my dad was into it and made it through one RoP before I left my dad to watch the rest (Very pretty, very boring).
Never did check out WoT. I'm just not feeling these of late. I feel like I need to watch something more violent, lots of angst in me even despite MA training and lifting to deal with some personal stuff that only time can fix (family members dying).
As well, I think I really was more into Vikings before it turned to semprini and totally loved TLK and maybe they speak to me more.
A Jon Snow sequel would interest me though.

I haven't gotten into either yet...House of Dragons due to not setting aside the time to watch, Rings of Power because, well... I've heard things. Frankly, despite being a fan of the books I still haven't watched season 2 of the Witcher either. I'm kind of in a similar boat it seems, these 'epics' kind of just...haven't baited me lately. Maybe it's just that Elden Ring hit my dark fantasy quota this year.
A Jon Snow sequel would be interesting. I also think that a mini-series of Arya assassinating people in new and exotic locations around the world would be an easy sell. Make each episode a short-story with a motif reflecting on her character. That could be fun. Provided good writing, of course.

it's slow af.
i think, i associate the Targaryens and Elves as similar races in their settings. and besides Daenerys (yes, sucker for crazy blondes) could care less about the Targaryens (though I did like Robert who descended from them)
I always preferred the Rohirrim anyways. I mean I liked Tauriel bc Evangeline Lily. I wouldn't even say I'm much into Dwarves though I like Thorin.
the hobbits are ok. i guess i don't think they are neat bc I'm old and no longer a kid and that's likely a lot of it
also after the hobbit movies, that could have been enough of Tolkien for a lifetime

Rings of Power... Not a fan of the reimagining of Galadriel. Slow....and does not feel like LoTR. But in its defense, its every bit as dry as the Silmarillion.

The characterization of Galadriel on RoP is consistent with Tolkien's writings, if one has read them, which includes the unpublished materials. I think most viewers are shocked by how unlikable she once was, but that was by design, and she will ultimately develop into the character most people are familiar with.
The series intends to be 50 hours in length. Season one was always going to slow due to unloading of a lot of exposition. I recommend some viewers binge season one when it has finished airing.
I dispute the notion that the Silmarillion is "dry." The Silmarillion contains Tolkien's cosmological stories, and the histories of Men, Dwarves, and Elves. And boy are those Elves fascinating. How can you find the escape of Beren and Luthien from Sauron's werewolves to be dry?
Does RoP not feel like Tolkien's LoTR, or not like Peter Jackson's LoTR? Comparing it to Jackson's films is comparing apples to oranges. Jackson's films very divisive among fans before, during, and after they were released. Many Tolkien purists dislike them as well. Christopher Tolkien held a grudge against Jackson for a long time.
My only gripe with the series is that they ought to hire an editor to ensure the dialogue sounds more consistent with works of high fantasy.

Viewer interaction with RoP is fascinating. It's the most watched show every week, and yet, there are so many people who feel the need to tell everyone how much they hate it or how boring it is. I strongly dislike mayonnaise, but I don't feel the impulse to tell everyone. In fact, I'd rather not talk about mayo at all.
The internet is a swirling eddy of despair.

I feel like there is a heavily political aspect (which I obviously won't get into here) to all the agitation around the Rings of Power. I was pretty excited when they first announced it, less excited when I saw the trailers, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and so far have yet to see a movie or TV adaptation that I personally feel captures Tolkien correctly. I'd love to see Tolkien done as drama rather than action adventure.
That said, I enjoy the heck out of Peter Jackson's trilogy, and I say if you enjoy a movie or TV show, to hell with the haters!

Even if something is bad you can still enjoy it, more power to you! Some folks just get too worked up over entertainment and act like you like something is a personal insult. That said, I've fallen behind on both shows but I love what I saw in HotD and liked RoP well enough to keep going. If anyone starts a mayonnaise vs barbecue sauce thread, I’m going barbecue all the way! I always knew you where a man of culture and learning pellius. The only time I touch that Mayo crap is when I make the coleslaw at work. Never eaten it in 10 years but everyone says I make some good slaw.

I've watched them all and in my opinion this is how I'd rank them,
1. House of the Dragon
2. Vikings
3. Rings of Power
4. Game of Thrones
5. The Last Kingdom
Overall I like the story telling and pace of HotD much better than RoP. RoP is just too fast paced and rushing out to really enjoy. It's only 8 episodes long and that just isn't enough to tell the story they're trying to. Of course they will have a second season but overall there's just too much going on and not enough detail for each arc to be truly interesting.
House of the Dragon seems to have learned something from GoT and has a great pace and is very intricate and detailed where it needs to be and more importantly when to not (unlike its predecessor). The characters all have an even depth including the side cast and the pacing per episode gets you really focused and involved.

I do. I call it the condiment of the devil and have for 20yrs as my buddy used to do the same.
I find it revolting on a molecular level. It's akin to VX gas that should have never been made and discovered.
I dash my coleslaw with vinegar and pepper instead of a vinaigraitte or Italian. Probably could do hot sauce tho.
Tbh, while the Hobbit movies got ridiculous, I still enjoyed them as I did LotR despite the changes from the stories (and no, Tom)
I only started it after like 6 episodes are out. I was ready to go do something else after the first episode but my dad kept watching.
I have zero issues with Dwarf gals without beards though I notice the Dwarfs have the typical Scottish accent like the Hobbits have this off Irish accent which is a good thing because it means the actors don't need to have their accents spot on which some definitely don't.
Though one would think, how do Dwarves not become super pasty if they never get much sunlight? But it's better to just roll with it and not think about it too much.
I'm sure if I was drinking while watching it, it would be better. The Hobbit song was nice tho.
I want like Rohirrim or Beornings or maybe some Ents at the very least.
While Tolkien is sort of the standard for base fantasy, I think we've come a long way in the genre, especially since GoT aired besides Vikings(which is definitely more fantasy than reality but whatevs). Some of us might remember the old DnD movies for example and all the Conan clones.

TLK is better than all of these even though there are definitely some parts and moments you have to move past.
I will make the square with any who disagree. Wyrd bið ful aræd!

I want like Rohirrim or Beornings or maybe some Ents at the very least. Well, they are making an animated film. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
And I'm sure the online discourse is going to be just as civil when it comes out.

i like house of the dragon alot more then rings of power due to the more gritty and mature nature, but i still enjoy rings of power for what it is despite the fact the harfoot storyline really doesnt do it for me and the numenoreans are nerfed super hard

If anyone starts a mayonnaise vs barbecue sauce thread, I’m going barbecue all the way! Kikkoman brand sriracha mayo and unagi sauce enter the ring. Add to literally anything fried (preferably shrimp or squid) or sushi and enjoy.
