Hi all just wanted to thank (or curse) you all for the encouragement I've gotten the past year, the long fabled shipment arrived after 700 dollars from UPS (and a fight I am still engaged in to get the 276 check they demanded comped, if not the shipping (free sword if i can)) and I did a full family photo by size!
I remember back in summer 2021 I'd had a smattering of Swiss sabres, a single Swedish sword, 2 court swords, and the desire to simply get Swiss swords. Then I started getting more and more 1-offs thanks to certain people here and the IASC group. Then some investment grade British Swords (I may be one of the few here who like British swords, but my personal taste skews to the mid-late 19th century and I think they have excellent cut and thrust profiles), and many many Auctionet and Catawiki buys while waiting for that European shipment that got out of hand!
At first I thought 20 would look good for a wall display. Then, "Hey I turn 30 in 2022 having 30 swords would be cool!" And somewhere past that I ended up with 78 swords lol. Probably going to have over 80 by the time I get a few nice patent hilts at the end of the year (for some analysis on performance in hand based on their increased thickness and width at the ricasso vs the non patent variety).
This giant sized 1889 Swedish artillery was the first auction win, for 99 euros. The foible is messed up but it has proper stampings, may grind it off/down as it's still 36" or so and try to make it useable. Had I not gotten this the past year would have been very different lol.
My best moment so far is a very long and in depth cleanup of the uber rare Thistle Hilt Field Officer's Highland Sword, owned by the Officer who led the Royal Scots into the First World War at Mons (my only gripe is the blade is a tad too narrow but at 850 grams perfectly usable albeit less capable vs the 32mm wide claymore pattern)
I have strong plans to do a few more bulk imports of Swiss swords for those curious, when the time and funds are available, I knew a few of you are interested in that. Also planning some more in depth restorations including re-etching the fabled Swedish 1859 whose blade I am working on right now, wish I could find a modern amalgam gilder near me but that can wait.
Anyways I just wanted to thank you all, I live in a fairly "modern" area so I really am a black sheep even in my HEMA club but it's nice to find a place where I belong and I hope in the next 20 years I can really grow and expand, job salary willing lol. Have some plans for articles and research as well. Here are a few choice photos over the past year, it's been a wild ride and I look forward to many more adventures with you all!
Any comments or questions or advice is more than welcome, please let me know if I can help!
Cheers!
